Walmart Thanksgiving Hours & Other Stores Open On Thanksgiving 2023

Walmart Thanksgiving Hours

Thanksgiving is one of those holidays with a never-ending to-do list! Figuring out seating arrangements, scheduling exciting Thanksgiving activities with the family or business colleagues, planning an epic menu, and even coordinating plus attending volunteer events are all part of the holiday. I mean, the list goes on and on. But then you’re probably wondering if any retailers, especially Walmart, would be open on the big day to assist you with all of your last-minute details. Well, this post will keep you informed on Walmart thanksgiving hours (if there are any) and other stores that will be open on thanksgiving day; including grocery stores.

Walmart Thanksgiving Hours Overview

It’s always a good idea to plan ahead when it comes to Black Friday shopping after Thanksgiving, especially in 2023. Due to continued health and safety concerns, getting your holiday shopping done will likely be more difficult, and store closures may cause problems if you’re trying to get some hot sale products at the last minute. All of the early birds are probably wondering when they will be able to get a jump start on their shopping. So, how will Walmart Thanksgiving hours in 2023 look? This year, see how close you can get.

It turns out Walmart had announced its thanksgiving holiday store hours on June 4th, 2021, and it’s now official for subsequent years: Walmart will not be operating on Thanksgiving Day. This isn’t surprising, given that the business was also shuttered on Christmas Eve in 2020, during the height of national lockdowns and Thanksgiving in 2023. “Our people make the difference,” said Dacona Smith, executive vice president, and chief operating officer of Walmart U.S., in a statement released on June 4. “One way we’re saying ‘thank you to our teams for their devotion and hard work this year is by closing our stores on Thanksgiving Day.” On Wednesday, Nov. 24, stores are scheduled to remain open as usual, and Walmart Black Friday hours have yet to be published.

The business may be closed for the third year in a row on Thanksgiving Day. The decision to remain closed was taken in 2020 as a way to recognize employees for their dedication during a tough period. According to NBC, it was the first time the business has been shuttered on Thanksgiving in 30 years. “We recognize that this has been a difficult year, and our associates have stood up to the plate. In a statement at the time, John Furner, president and CEO of Walmart U.S., said, “We hope they will enjoy a special Thanksgiving Day at home with their loved ones.”

If you discover you forgot to get your mother the 60 percent discount 50-inch flat-screen TV she’s always wanted, remember that Walmart will be closed on Thanksgiving Day. The store will, however, remain open on Black Friday, Nov. 26, when thousands of turkey-fueled customers will certainly be lined up around the storefront in order to nab those sweet holiday bargains.

Closed Stores on Thanksgiving Day 2023

The following retailers have confirmed that they will be closed on Thanksgiving Day 2023 via press release or other direct communication with RetailMeNot. We’ll keep you updated when additional information becomes available.

What about Thanksgiving Day? Retailers are keeping their Black Friday strategies under wraps. We’ll keep you updated on when big shops will open on Black Friday and what their in-store plans are. Expect to be up at the crack of dawn to go shopping. We observed lots of stores open their doors as early as 5 a.m. or 6 a.m. on Black Friday even in 2020.

While stores will be closed on Thanksgiving, companies will be providing Black Friday deals online on Thanksgiving, if not before. Our pals at BlackFriday.com will be broadcasting retailer sale announcements so you can know which offers will be available to shop online on Thanksgiving Day.

Best Buy

Back in June, Best Buy announced that it would be closed on Thanksgiving. While it hasn’t specified when it will open for Black Friday, it has confirmed that it would begin its sale a week before the big day – on Nov. 19.

BJ’s Wholesale Club

According to a press release issued on Oct. 12, BJ’s will be closed on Thanksgiving for the 15th year in a row.

The store’s Black Friday opening time has already been confirmed: 7 a.m. According to the press release, on Nov. 26, in-store purchasing will include a “treasure-hunt experience.” Early Black Friday deals, on the other hand, will begin on November 4 and run through November 29. When those discounts go live, you’ll be able to shop them right here.

Costco

There are no surprises here. Even before COVID-19, Costco has always been closed on Thanksgiving. It’s also one among the few major stores that remain open on government holidays such as New Year’s Day and Labor Day.

Dick’s Sporting Goods

Dick’s Sporting Goods, a long-time member of the Open on Thanksgiving club, said in February that it would close stores and distribution sites for Thanksgiving 2023. For Black Friday, stores will reopen, but no hours have been set.

Kohl’s

Kohl’s confirmed in a June press statement that it will be closed on Thanksgiving 2023. However, it guarantees deals on Kohls.com and through the Kohl’s app.

REI

This year, both Thanksgiving and Black Friday will be closed at the outdoor and sporting goods retailer. REI has been closed on both days for the past seven years (while continuing to pay its staff) and urges customers to #OptOutside instead.

Target

Target was the first retailer to announce (in January) that it would be closed on Thanksgiving in 2023. What is the logic behind it? According to a press announcement announcing the closure, customers preferred it.

Walmart

Every year, Walmart’s Black Friday sale is one of the most anticipated. However, in 2023 no retailers may be open on Thanksgiving. As a thank-you to its staff, Walmart announced in June that all of its stores would be closed on Nov. 25. On Thanksgiving Day, however, expect to be able to shop for offers online.

Walmart has also announced that it will be holding early Black Friday sales throughout November, with deals starting at 5 a.m. on November 5 and 12.

Simon Shopping Centers

On Oct. 8, Simon Facilities, which owns 168 malls and shops in the United States, declared that all of its domestic properties would be closed on Thanksgiving Day 2023. For Black Friday, properties will reopen. Because department stores attached to malls (like Macy’s) typically have their own outdoor entrances, they can operate independently. Stores within the closed malls, on the other hand, will remain closed.

Thanksgiving 2023: What Stores Will Be Open?

While most businesses will be closed on Thanksgiving Day this year, a few are open every year and will be open on Thanksgiving Day 2020 — though some will be open for shorter hours. While you won’t find any doorbusters on Thanksgiving, the following stores will be open for pharmacy necessities, groceries, and more:

  • Albertsons
  • Bass Pro Shops
  • Big Lots
  • CVS
  • Cabela’s
  • Dollar General
  • Dollars for Families
  • Giant
  • Harris Teeter
  • HEB
  • Hy-Vee
  • Kroger
  • Meijer
  • Rite Aid
  • Safeway
  • Sprouts Farmers Market
  • Starbucks
  • Walgreens
  • Wegmans
  • Whole Foods

As stores confirm their plans, we’ll update our list. The fact that stores are closed on Thanksgiving shouldn’t have a significant impact on your shopping list. The majority of retailers will start offering offers online. In fact, if you wait until Thanksgiving or Black Friday to start shopping, you may be too late this year. Because the retail industry is plagued by supply chain challenges, anticipate the best Black Friday discounts to sell out in seconds. Due to the anticipated shipping delays this year, expect your orders to take longer to arrive.

Why are stores closed on Thanksgiving this Year?

Stores are being forced to close due to a variety of issues. To begin with, encouraging people to cram into stores on a national holiday (particularly one associated with family) is simply not a good look — or a safe strategy — especially with the pandemic still a concern.

Second, the retail business, as well as its employees, are bearing the brunt of this year’s persistent labor shortages. Many of the stores that remained closed on Thanksgiving Day cited “giving their staff a day off” as the rationale for their choice.

Finally, by closing on Thanksgiving, shops don’t stand to lose much (except perhaps some publicity). Thanksgiving online spending smashed records last year when the epidemic was in full swing. Shoppers will be more than happy to purchase online on Thanksgiving Day if shops can maintain popular items in stock this year.

Big Box Stores Retailers

Big-box shops are giving their employees the day off for the holiday. Target was the first to announce that it would be closed for Thanksgiving, followed by Walmart and Kohls.

Home Improvement Shops

You might be out of luck if you need a last-minute remedy for a clogged bathroom sink (or new plates for your Thanksgiving table) because Bed Bath & Beyond, Home Depot, and Lowe’s are closed on Thanksgiving.

Warehouse Club Stores

Costco, BJ’s Wholesale, and Sam’s Club all be closed on Thanksgiving Day, so stock up now!

Thanksgiving Day: Are Grocery Stores Open?

In general, grocery stores will be open on Thanksgiving; however, you may need to shop early, as many stores have limited hours and may close before Thanksgiving dinner.

In the past, Wegmans and Whole Foods stayed open until 4 p.m. on Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving hours at Kroger, Food Lion, and Safeway tended to run through the morning, with most stores closing by dinnertime.

However, not every supermarket will be open for your last-minute shopping trip. Because Aldi, Trader Joe’s, and Lidl are usually closed on Thanksgiving, you’ll have to stock up on last-minute ingredients the night before.

No matter how well you plan ahead for your Thanksgiving meal, something always slips through the cracks on the big day. After all, there’s a lot to remember: the turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweets, beverages, and so on. That’s not even taking into account any decorations or entertainment you would want to provide. As a result, it’s acceptable if anything slips between the cracks. These grocery stores, thankfully, are open on Thanksgiving to save the day.

Due to the holiday, some of these stores will be open all day, while others may have limited hours. Before getting in the car and going there, we strongly advise phoning ahead to make sure the store you want to visit is open. While some will undoubtedly be well-stocked with everything you’ll need for a big Thanksgiving dinner, others may only have the bare essentials.

It can be aggravating to have to hurry to the shop on Thanksgiving Day, but it’s important to remember what the holiday is actually about: giving thanks and spending time with loved ones. So make sure you have all of the last-minute goods on your shopping list and head to the retailers on our list that are closest to you.

The firm guarantees same-day delivery in over 5,500 cities, so you can keep an eye on all the great dishes you’re cooking while still getting the last-minute supplies you need.

#25. Walgreens

Walgreens isn’t a full-service grocery store, but they usually contain one or two food aisles that can come in handy when you’re in a need. On Thanksgiving, most Walgreens locations will be open for regular hours, but this can vary, so call ahead.

Pharmacies Open on Thanksgiving Day

Illnesses and injuries don’t take vacations, so if you’re suffering from post-Thanksgiving indigestion, you’ll probably be able to find a drugstore where you can get some antacids. On Thanksgiving Day, most pharmacies are open as usual.
