Gross profit is a line item on a company’s income statement that represents the company’s gross margin for the fiscal year before deducting any indirect expenses, interest, and taxes. In other words, it denotes the money a corporation makes from the sale of its goods or services after deducting the direct costs of production.

Direct costs might include labour costs, equipment in the manufacturing process, supplier costs, raw material costs, and transportation costs. Though, taxes are not removed since they do not directly connect to the product’s manufacturing and sale.

Gross Income= Gross Revenue – Cost of Goods Sold

Let’s assume that the gross revenue of XYZ company is $1,500,000, and the expenses were as follows:

  • Cost of raw materials: $170,000

The gross income is hereby calculated thus:

Gross Income= (1,500,000) – (170,000 + 80,000 + 360,000 + 170,000 + 120,000)

= (1,500,000)-(900,000) =$600,000

How to Calculate Gross Pay For A Full-time  Employee

As previously stated, an employee’s gross pay is the amount of money he earns before any deductions. A full-time employee’s pay is their annual compensation or wages before taxes. However, a full-time employee may have additional sources of income that should count when assessing their income.

Assume that Frank earns an annual income of $300,000 from his financial management consultancy work. Frank also earns $100,000 in rental income from his real estate properties, $50,000 in dividends from shares he owns at Company XYZ, and $20,000 in interest income from his savings account. Frank’s income can be calculated as thus:

Gross pay= 300,000 + 100,000 + 50,000 + 20,000 = $470,000

How to Calculate Gross Pay for an Hourly Employee

To compute an hourly employee’s gross pay, multiply their hourly rate by the number of hours worked. Then include any other sources of income that apply, such as overtime, tips, and commissions. 

For example, Sara earns $12 per hour, and she works 60 hours per pay period (That’s 30 hours per week). When calculating Sara’s gross pay, it should be: 

$12 x 60 =$720.

Therefore, Sara’s gross income for that period is $720. To further calculate her total gross pay, you will need to add her other income sources.

If Sara works overtime, multiply her overtime hours by the overtime rate (1.5 times her usual hourly wage). Then add their overtime pay to their normal pay.

Sara, for example, covers an extra shift and works eight hours of overtime one week, for a total of 48 hours worked. As a result, Sara will get her usual hourly rate of $12 for the first 30 hours, with her overtime pay of $18 for the remaining 8 hours.
