What Is the Fortune 1000?
The Fortune 1000 is an annual listing compiled by the popular Fortune Magazine of the 1000 largest American companies. Simply put, qualified companies are ranked by revenue earned from core activities, discounted operations, and consolidated subsidiaries. And because revenue is the criterion for inclusion, every business must be granted permission to operate in the United States and file a 10-K or comparable financial statement with the appropriate government agency.
However, private organizations are not included on the list because they often hide financial information from the public. In other words, companies that fail to report full financial accounts for at least three quarters of the current fiscal year are omitted from the list.
An Overview
Despite garnering far less attention than the more selective Fortune 500 rankings, the Fortune 1000 is nonetheless regarded as a significant and respected list. The annual list piques the curiosity of readers who follow the business world and want to learn more about the most powerful figures in the US economy.
Walmart (WMT) has topped the list for eight of the last eleven years, with the exception of 2009 and 2012, when oil prices reached near-term highs and ExxonMobil (XOM) dethroned them.
Many investors consider a drop in rank or failure to make the list to be an indication of a company’s or industry’s weakness, whereas a climb higher indicates strength. And considering that this list is based on revenue, several of the companies at the top provide products that would be useful to the public. These include groceries and clothing from Walmart, petrol from an ExxonMobil station, or the widely used iPhone from Apple. As a result, many business-to-business (B2B) software firms are unable to reach the top of the rankings.
As of 2018, California had the highest number of firms on the Fortune 1000 list (118) in comparison to other states in the US. On the other hand, New York City had the most (74) of all US cities.
How to Invest in Fortune 1000 Companies
Investing in any of the top earners on the list is pretty tricky. For the most part, you might not be able to invest in each company individually unless you’re Warren Buffet. Even if you have enough money, investing in them one by one may not be prudent or practicable.
Fortunately, an index fund could be a good choice. The S&P 500, for example, is an index fund that monitors the performance of the 500 largest firms in the United States. All of the companies in this index are expected to be on the Fortune 1000 list. It may, however, overlook the Fortune 1000’s bottom 500 companies.
The Russell 1000 index tracks the top stocks in the Russell 3000 index, although it covers a broader spectrum of companies. It focuses on the market capitalization of the United States’ top 1000 corporations. Because of the large number of stocks included, this index may be a better choice for investors who want to invest in as many Fortune 1000 companies as possible.
Criticisms
The Fortune 1000 list is an excellent indicator of the current state of the corporate world. This list, however, is overshadowed by the Fortune 500, which ranks the top 500 firms by revenue. The fast turnover of companies near the bottom of the Fortune 1000 list prevents them from achieving the same general recognition as the smaller Fortune 500 list in many ways.
Scholars equated turnover with positive economic churn, underlying innovation, and productivity strength for many years. On the other hand, high churn isn’t always an indication of robust business growth. It can also indicate an active merger and acquisition (M&A) environment in which giant corporations buy startups or small businesses.

The Fortune 1000 is a subset of the Fortune 500, which is a comprehensive ranking of the country’s largest and most powerful corporations. The Fortune 1000 comprises the Fortune 500 and Fortune 100 companies, a list of the largest 500 and 100 corporations, respectively.
Being named to the Fortune 1000 is an honor, but it isn’t the only list that honors the growth of business and entrepreneurship in the United States.
