This group of hotels is in the United States and has everything a person could want. In 1957, in Bethesda, Maryland, John Willard Marriott set up the Marriott Corporation. It has a large number of motels in many different countries. Let’s talk about the brand name; Marriott, and its logo.

In 1927, two American businessmen named Frank Kimball and John Willard Marriott bought a small grocery store and called it “Hot Shoppe.” Not long after that, they added a catering business as a side business. However, in 1957, the company moved into the hotel business. Ten years after it began, it changed its name to the Marriott Corporation.

Before 1993, when it successfully split into Host Marriott Corporation and Marriott International, it only had one name. The first company dealt with real estate, while the second focused on the hospitality and food and beverage industries. Eventually, some of the second company’s services were added to the Marriott logo Hotels & Resorts brand.

Often, the logos of a multinational company and its subsidiaries look the same. They also use the distinctive Marriott logo to bring people together. Also, the parent company’s new logo is a wordmark in a different font. Only the letter “M” from the previous logo remains. As a result, her branding now focuses on the capital letter “M.”

The Marriott Logo Events Over the Past Few Years

  • On January 13, 1992, the Luxury Collection name was first given to ITT Sheraton’s 28 most expensive hotels and 33 Sheraton Towers.
  • In February 1994, ITT Sheraton Hotels and Resorts bought the majority of shares in CIGA, which stands for the Italian Grand Hotels Company.   • In 2012, the company said it would be doing a lot more business in Asia, with a special focus on China.
  • In 2014, Helena Christensen, a Danish supermodel, became the brand’s official spokeswoman.
  • In 2015, the company set aside $700,000,000 for building renovations.

1993 – 2016

Since 1993, the logo for Marriott Hotels has been the first word of the company. To get the reader’s attention, the designers chose a bold dark red color and a font with short serifs and a hexagonal “o.” The letter “M,” which has strokes of different widths, stood out in particular. However, the only thing left of the writing was a red circle with three white stripes that looked like the letter “M.”

2016 – today

In 2016, Marriott International changed the color and font of its wordmark. The only thing that makes the old version different is the letter “M.” If you remove the serifs, the letters around them look less elegant. The lowercase letter “o” now has an oval shape. At the bottom, where the circle had been, there was ugly writing that said “INTERNATIONAL.” For this one, the designers stuck with the tried-and-true color of black.

Marriott Hotels & Resorts

Marriott Hotels & Resorts is a Marriott International, Inc. hotel chain. This brand is in the same class as Sheraton, Marriott’s Vacation Club, and Delta Hotels, which are all high-end hotels. 

It is in charge of more than 600 hotels and resorts in the United States and around the world. However, the network began in Europe in 1975 and grew to include 47 other countries by 1999. The trademark logo is a burgundy “M” that looks like the logo for Marriott International. The close relationship between a parent company and its most well-known brand shows how strong that relationship is.

1957 – 1989

Marriott Hotels & Resorts began in 1957. At first, there were only two motels to choose from. One was close to the airport, and the other was closer to the city. With the opening of its second hotel, the Marriott logo became a well-known name in the hotel business.

Even back then, the writers used the original shape of the letter “M,” with its two diagonals, thin connecting line, and gracefully curved stripe. The biggest strokes, however, curled in different directions and were not parallel.

To decorate the phrase, the designers made their own set of decorative glyphs in the Gothic typeface. So, the symbol was both unique and easy to spot. However, the phrase and the symbol to its left were both painted in a light shade of carmine-red to make them stand out. 

The sign was two long, skinny triangles folded like butterfly wings. It’s probably the logo’s stylized “M.” On top of the statue was a small black crown with four points. However, it was a sign of how well Marriott hotels take care of their guests.

1989 – 2013

At first, the logo for the main brand looked like that of Marriott International. It said “Marriott” in red and had a small circle, but the word was at the top instead of on the left. The words “HOTELS RESORTS SUITES” were written below the first, with a long, thin line between them.

2013 – today

The new logo for Marriott hotels and resorts is a big red letter “M.” The first word of the brand’s name is written to the right of this heading in black sans serif letters. Since its debut in 2013, the Marriott logo has been completely redesigned, making it more modern and getting rid of its signature double “M.”

The Emblem’s Font and Colors

The stylized “M” logo is easy to recognize, and the parent company and all of its subsidiaries use it. It is a part of the letters in the Marriott International logo, but it also works as a graphic symbol for Marriott Hotels & Resorts.

Most of the time, a large company will have its own typeface that it uses in all of its communications. The logo’s primary color is black.  American Red (#b41f3a) is an elegant addition to Marriott Hotels & Resorts that will never go out of style.

The History of the Marriot Logo, in Detail

Marriott International, Inc., an American multinational company, runs, franchises, and licenses hotels, apartments, and timeshares all over the world. However, the main office of the company is in the Maryland city of Bethesda. The company was started by J. Willard Marriott and his wife, Alice.

How It Started and How It Grew at First

In 1927, John Willard Marriott and his wife Alice opened a root beer stand in the nation’s capital. This was the start of the Marriott Corporation, which is still in business today. After he finished a Mormon mission in New England, Marriott went to Washington, D.C., and saw how hot it was there in the summer. However, after going to and graduating from the University of Utah, Marriott decided that the neighborhood of Columbia Heights needed a place where people could buy cold drinks. 

He bought the franchise rights to open an A&W root beer stand there. After a successful first summer, they knew they would need A&W’s blessing to keep serving food throughout the year. He saw that the restaurant he had named Hot Shoppes did well. In order to grow his business, he took the curb out of an empty lot next to one of his hot shops and turned it into the East Coast’s first drive-in. Because this plan worked so well, the Marriott family had seven Hot Shoppes in the Washington, DC area by 1932. In 1953, Hot Shoppes, Inc. was made available to the public through an IPO.

On January 16, 1957, the company opened the Twin Bridges Motor Hotel in Arlington, Virginia. This was the start of its hospitality business. The price per night went up by $1 for each extra person in the car, up to a maximum of $9. The Key Bridge Marriott in Rosslyn, Arlington, Virginia, is the second hotel owned by Marriott International. It opened in 1959 and has been open ever since.

Hot Shoppes, Inc. Became the Marriott Corporation in 1967

Both California’s Great America and Six Flags Great America, the company’s first two amusement parks, opened in 1976. In 1984, Six Flags bought the second one.

Corporation, Marriott International

In 1993, Marriott Corporation split into Marriott International, Inc. and Host Hotels & Resorts, a property-owning company.

In 1995, when Marriott made it possible to book a room online, the business world took notice. However, in April 1995, Marriott paid 49% of what it was worth to buy the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company. Marriott was sure that it could improve the financial performance of The Ritz-Carlton, a struggling hotel company whose many individual hotels were either losing money or just breaking even. 

People thought that the total cost to Marriott, including cash and debt that Marriott took on, was more than $200 million. The next year, Marriott spent $331 million to buy The Ritz-Carlton, Atlanta, and a majority stake in two properties owned by William Johnson, a real estate developer who had bought The Ritz-Carlton, Boston in 1983 and added to his Ritz-Carlton holdings over the next twenty years.

The Ritz-Carlton brand grew by getting into the timeshare business. The Ritz-Carlton did better because Marriott’s reservation system and buying power helped it. However, in 1998, Marriott bought enough of The Ritz-Carlton to be in charge of it.

1997

In 1997, the business bought the Renaissance and Ramada hotel chains from Chow Tai Fook Group and its subsidiary, New World Development. New World Development and Marriott International have both signed contracts to manage the hotel. The Marriott World Trade Center was one of the buildings destroyed in the September 11th, 2001 attacks.

In 2003, the business was split into two parts: senior living properties, now run by Sunrise Senior Living, and distribution. Cendant bought the Ramada brand in 1997, and in 2004, the company gave the rights to the brand to another company.

In 2005, 53 organizations, including Marriott International and Marriott Vacation Club International, gave the maximum amount of $250,000 to George W. Bush’s second inauguration. Since July 19, 2006, when the company put in place a smoking ban, all Marriott-owned and -operated properties in the United States and Canada have been smoke-free since September 2006.

In 2007

The bombing of a hotel that the company had a franchise in 2003, the bombing of a Marriott hotel in Islamabad in 2008, and the bombings in Jakarta in 2009 all had effects on hotels that the company owned or had franchises in.

Marriott announced on November 11, 2010, that it planned to add more than 600 hotels to its portfolio by 2015. Most of these new hotels will be in China, India, and Southeast Asia. Marriott said on January 21, 2011, that it would not show adult movies in the hotel’s entertainment options. It will do this by using a service called “video on demand.” Bill Marriott gave Arne Sorenson control of the company as CEO on March 31, 2012. He then became the executive chairman of the company.

Mitt Romney left Marriott International’s board of directors in 2011 to run for president, but the company still paid him $260,390 in director’s fees that year. His 2010 tax returns were made public, and they showed that he made $113,881 from Marriott in director’s fees that year. In February 2012, Bloomberg News wrote an article about Romney’s time as the head of Marriott’s tax department. During that time, the company was accused of several “scams” (John McCain’s words) and was sued for manipulating the U.S. Tax Code, but lost in court.

In 2012

In December 2012, Guinness World Records named the JW Marriott Marquis Dubai, a five-star hotel in Dubai, the tallest hotel in the world. However, on October 3, 2014, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) fined Marriott $600,000 for using the “containment” feature of a Wi-Fi monitoring system to mess with client-owned networks in the convention space of its Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center in Nashville. However, as part of the scheme, they made use of Wi-Fi de-authentication attacks to mess up the mobile hotspots of clients. 

After getting bad feedback from customers, media outlets, and major technology and mobile carriers, Marriott International, the American Hotel and Lodging Association, and Ryman Hospitality Properties asked the FCC to change the rules so they could continue jamming client-owned networks. But at the beginning of 2015, they were forced to give up this position. Because of the incident, Marriott’s policy of charging too much for Internet access got a bad press.

In 2015

On April 1, 2015, Marriott bought a brand of hotels from Canada called Delta Hotels. They had 38 properties all over the country at the time.

On November 16, 2015, it became public that Marriott would buy Starwood for $13 billion. However, on March 3, 2016, a group led by China’s Anbang Insurance Group made a $14 billion bid for Starwood. However, after Marriott raised its offer to $13.6 billion on March 21, Starwood ended its deal with Anbang and went ahead with its merger with Marriott. 

After getting the necessary approvals from regulatory bodies, the merger between Marriott and Starwood was finalized on September 23, 2016. The new company has more than 5,700 hotels, more than 1,100,000 rooms, and 30 different hotel brands. Since more than 75% of Starwood’s revenue came from markets outside of the U.S., the purchase of Starwood helped Marriott grow its business outside of the U.S.

In 2018

On November 30, 2018, it was reported that a data breach at Marriott had put the old Starwood brands at risk. However, after hearing the news, New York Attorney General Barbara Underwood said that her office would look into the hack. According to the investigation, the breach was part of a larger spying operation that targeted health insurance companies and the security clearance records of millions of Americans. People think that the hackers work for the Ministry of State Security, which is the Communist government’s civilian spy agency. When the news first came out, Marriott said that the personal information of 500 million of its customers had been stolen. In January 2019, the company said that “fewer than 383 million” customers were affected and that many of those customers’ credit cards had already expired.

In 2019

The business bought the hotel chain Elegant Hotels in December 2019. Elegant Hotels has seven hotels in Barbados. When the company found out about a data breach in February 2020, the contact information for 5.2 million clients had been stolen.

When the COVID-19 pandemic started in April 2020, the company put in place stricter rules about cleanliness, such as requiring the use of disinfectant-filled electrostatic sprayers, stocking hotel rooms with disinfecting wipes and clearing out public areas to make more room for people to get away from each other. During the worst of the pandemic, the number of people living in a given area dropped to 31%.

CEO Arne Sorenson died of pancreatic cancer on February 15, 2021. Anthony Capuano, who used to be the group president of global development, design, and operations at Marriott, became CEO and Director on February 23, 2021. He will replace Sorensen, who left the company.

When it turned down the World Uyghur Congress at one of its Prague hotels in November 2021, the company was called out for its “political neutrality.” In August 2022, workers started moving into the new 21-story, 785,000-square-foot headquarters building on Wisconsin Avenue. However, the building was officially opened on September 21, 2023. The new building and the nearby Marriott Bethesda Downtown hotel are part of a four-year-long, $600 million project in downtown Bethesda.

1997-2000

2012

Marriott has bought the Gaylord Hotels brand, which includes five hotels and about 2 million square feet of meeting and event space.

2013

Moxy Hotels are Marriott’s first entry into the budget hotel market in Europe, and they have a three-star rating. However, the brand AC Hotels by Marriott, which is known for putting a lot of emphasis on design, has come to the Americas.

2014
