That’s where this packing list comes in. We’ve compiled everything you need to know about what to pack for Hawaii, no matter what your plans are. From beachwear and hiking gear to sunscreen and bug spray, we’ve got you covered.

So whether you’re planning a relaxing beach vacation or an adventurous hiking trip, use this packing list to make sure you’re prepared for anything.

What to Pack for Hawaii Vacation

The following is a checklist of what to pack when preparing for a Hawaii vacation.

#1. US-Issued Driver’s license

You do not need a passport to visit Hawaii if you are an American. However, as with any other domestic flight, you will need a federal or state-issued photo ID from the United States. So don’t forget to bring your driver’s license! You must also show identification when picking up your rental car.

#2. Phone Charger

Nothing is worse than going to take a vacation photo and discovering that your phone is dead! So, why not bring along a portable phone charger?

This item is a must-have, especially if you intend to spend the majority of your time away from the resort. Our top pick is the Anker PowerCore 10000 Portable Charger, which is available on Amazon.

#3. Reusable Water Bottle

A reusable water bottle should definitely be on your Hawaii packing list. In fact, Hawaii takes pride in the high quality and flavor of its tap water. Furthermore, using a refillable bottle is one of the most straightforward ways to make a conscious effort to travel sustainably.

You should bring an insulated bottle to keep your water cool while hiking, relaxing on the beach, or exploring the islands. One of the most popular brands, for example, is Hydro Flask, which offers a lifetime warranty on its double-wall vacuum-insulated stainless steel water bottles.

#4. Packing Cubes

Using packing cubes is unquestionably the best way to maximize suitcase space when packing for Hawaii. Sort your clothes for your trip into categories, then place each category in its own cube.

Separate day clothes, pajamas, underwear, and bathing suits/cover-ups, for example. Remember that when using packing cubes, you should roll your clothing rather than fold it!

#5. SD Card and Camera

Are you wondering what to bring to Hawaii but haven’t considered bringing a camera? You absolutely must! Photos make excellent vacation keepsakes, and Hawaii has some of the world’s most beautiful landscapes.

Although many people will take photos with their phones, we believe that nothing beats the quality of a DSLR photo. Just remember to bring a memory card if you bring your camera! We recommend 64 GB so you don’t run out of space on your trip.

#6. Credit and/or Debit Cards

Your debit and credit cards are most likely the most important items to bring to Hawaii! In general, carrying cards is far more convenient than carrying cash.

Throughout the Hawaiian Islands, debit and credit cards are widely accepted. Nonetheless, you may want to keep some cash on hand for minor expenses such as parking, tips for a tour guide or valet, and farmers’ markets.

#7. Backpack

You’ll need a backpack large enough to hold your wallet, phone, sunglasses, sunscreen, water bottle, and camera. Why not use a packable backpack to save space in your suitcase? Whatever backpack you choose, make sure it has comfortable straps so you can wear it for hours on end without discomfort.

#8. Cooling Towel

Pack a cooling towel to help you regulate your body temperature if you suffer from heat exhaustion. These towels are ideal for packing in your backpack if you intend to go hiking, spend time at the beach, or simply walk around shopping. They usually stay cool (about 30 degrees below your body temperature) for 1-3 hours.

To activate a cooling towel, simply soak it in water, wring it out, and wrap it around your neck. Furthermore, these towels are machine washable, allowing you to easily wash and reuse them!

#9. Leave-in Hair Conditioner

If you’re going to Hawaii, you’re probably going to spend a lot of time in the water. However, saltwater, pool water, and even windy weather may cause your hair to become a tangle.

As a result, you should bring a leave-in hair conditioner with you. We also recommend bringing a detangler brush with you to quickly brush out knots after a day at the beach!

#10. Bug Spray and/or Mosquito Repellent Bracelets

Mosquito repellent is an absolute must, especially if you plan to spend time in Hawaii’s rainforest areas or visit a botanical garden.

For those who can’t stand the smell, there are waterproof bands that you can slip on and wear for the day. Keep in mind that if you pack spray, it must go in your checked luggage.

#11. Aloe Vera Gel

We strongly advise packing aloe vera in your suitcase for Hawaii, though we hope you won’t need it! If you get sunburned while on vacation, aloe can provide immediate relief.

Plus, we guarantee that it’s better to be safe than sorry with this one! Although you can buy aloe on the islands, it can be expensive in tourist areas like Waikiki.

#12. AirTag

When it comes to planning an exciting and worry-free trip, using an Apple AirTag on the way to Hawaii can provide travelers with peace of mind. This is due to AirTag’s reliance on Bluetooth technology in the Apple Find My app, which makes tracking valuable items incredibly simple.

Simply place the AirTag in your suitcase, and you’ll be able to track its location in the app’s “items” section. As a result, if your luggage does not appear at baggage claim, you will be able to determine where it went and notify the airline.

#13. Windproof Travel Umbrella

Because rain showers are fairly common throughout the Hawaiian islands, packing a windproof travel umbrella is always a good idea. Even if there is no rain, you may want to bring an umbrella to protect yourself from the sun!

#14. Medications on Prescription

One of the most important items on this Hawaii packing list is your prescription medications. We always recommend bringing extra medicine (if possible) and packing it in your carry-on.

You do NOT want to be without your medication if your airline misplaces your checked bag! Additionally, the Hawaii Tourism Authority recommends packing a copy of your prescriptions, your PCP’s contact information, and your medical plan details, just in case.

What Should You Pack to the Beach in Hawaii?

#15. Coral Reef-Safe Sunscreen

One of the most important things to remember when visiting Hawaii is to wear sunscreen! However, when purchasing sunscreen for your vacation, make sure it is reef-safe. If you’re not sure what this means, it basically means you don’t want to see oxybenzone or octinoxate on the label.

Sun Bum, Aveeno Positively Mineral, Thinksport, and TropicSport Mineral Sunscreen are all popular reef-safe sunscreen brands. If you want to buy Hawaiian-made sunscreen, look into Kokua Sun Care, Mama KULEANA, Little Hands Hawaii, or Raw Love Mineral Sunscreen.

#16. Chapstick with SPF

You may have brought sunblock to protect your skin, but did you bring SPF chapstick to protect your lips? Choose a reef-safe chapstick with at least SPF 30. Because Hawaii is both sunny and windy, chapstick is a must-have in your beach bag or backpack.

#17. Waterproof Phone Case

If you aren’t ready to buy an underwater action camera, you may still want a less expensive way to take photos in the water! In this case, we recommend bringing a waterproof phone case. Don’t take the chance of dropping your unprotected phone into the water at the beach or pool.

These waterproof cases have an IPX8 rating and are certified to keep your belongings safe for up to 100 feet/30 meters. They’ll also keep your phone sand-free!

#18. Beach Bag

Bringing a large beach bag is the simplest way to ensure that everything makes it to the beach! We recommend bags with numerous pockets, but you can also find bags with detachable coolers or even waterproof compartments.

When it comes to beach totes for Hawaii, the bigger, the better. You’ll need space for snacks, toys, beach towels, water, and other necessities, especially if you’re traveling with children.

#19. Waterproof Dry Bag

We recommend bringing a waterproof dry bag for those who enjoy water sports and activities. These lightweight dry compression sacks protect your belongings from water damage.

A waterproof dry bag, for example, is an important essential to pack for Hawaii if you’re going kayaking, boating, fishing, or even hiking in a particularly wet area. Sizes range from 10L to 55L, allowing you to keep all of your belongings dry and safe during your travel adventures!

#20. Packable Cooler

Pack a collapsible cooler bag to save money on your next trip! You can bring snacks, sandwiches, and drinks to the beach this way. All you have to do in Hawaii is remember to bring ice from your hotel or cold packs from the grocery store!

#21. Sand-Free Beach Towel

Normal beach and pool towels will most likely be provided by your resort. Nonetheless, we believe that a sand-resistant beach towel should be included on all beach packing lists!

For starters, they make packing up from the beach super easy, and you don’t have to worry about sanding down passersby. Second, a sand-free towel will assist you in keeping your rental car clean!

#22. Camera for Underwater Use

Hawaii is the ideal location for using an underwater camera to capture all of your adventures! Unfortunately, your iPhone camera will not suffice. The good news is that there are now many affordable options for waterproof cameras. Check out the GoPro Hero10 Black if you’re looking for a long-lasting action camera.

The AKASO V50 Elite, on the other hand, is a more affordable option. With its case, this camera is waterproof up to 131ft / 40m and has excellent video stabilization. Add an underwater camera to your Hawaii packing list, especially if you enjoy snorkeling or other water sports.

#23. Kindle

If you enjoy reading on the beach, bring a Kindle to save space in your suitcase. The Kindle Paperwhite is waterproof up to two meters in fresh water for 60 minutes and 0.25 meters in seawater for three minutes. Furthermore, the built-in adjustable light is ideal for reading in direct sunlight!

What to Pack for Hawaii Vacation: How to Dress

When packing for a trip to Hawaii, keep in mind that the atmosphere on the islands is relaxed. Unless you’re planning a formal dinner or attending an event, formalwear, heels, or loafers are probably unnecessary. Instead, focus on activewear, beachwear, and whatever makes you feel comfortable!

Light and Breathable Clothing

As previously stated, Hawaii attire is all about being comfortable, especially in hot weather. As a result, linen is a very popular fabric to wear. Pack tank tops, shorts, sundresses, and at least one maxi dress for women. Casual dresses, especially those that can double as a cover-up, are popular in Hawaii.

Men should wear fun aloha shirts (also known as Hawaiian shirts), t-shirts, and chino shorts. If you want to wear aloha attire (shirts and dresses), we highly recommend purchasing these items in Hawaii. Just remember to be mindful of the patterns you select. Avoid designs that are overly bright or loud, for example.

If you intend to go hiking during your vacation, you should bring separate athletic clothing. Pack a sports bra (or two), a workout top, athletic shorts, socks, and possibly leggings (early mornings can be chilly). Men should wear a quick-dry shirt, outdoor shorts, and athletic socks.

Keep in mind that if you’re going horseback riding or zip-lining during your trip, you’ll need a pair of pants.

Swimming Suits

It’s probably a good idea to bring at least three different bathing suits. This way, you can let one or two suits dry from the previous day while still wearing another suit. Women may want to bring a mix of one-piece suits and bikinis, while men can wear board shorts and swimming trunks.

If you’re looking for new swimsuits for your vacation, we recommend shopping locally once you arrive in Hawaii! Issa De’ Mar, Sundaze Bikinis, and Honolua Surf Co. are just a few of the well-known Hawaiian swimsuit brands for both men and women.

UV Rash Guards

A rash guard is not required for everyone on their Hawaii vacation packing list; however, if you are an especially active person, we highly recommend purchasing one! A rash guard, also known as a “rashie,” protects your skin from rashes.

People also use them to prevent sunburn and to stay warm in colder water. As a result, you may prefer to wear a rash guard while surfing, snorkeling, or engaging in other water activities.

Cover-Ups

You’ll want an easy cover-up to throw on whether you’re going to the beach or the pool. Choose quick-drying cover-ups so that you can wear them multiple times during your vacation.

If you’re concerned about packing space, one option is to bring dresses that can double as cover-ups. A sarong is another interesting option!

Waist Bag

A fanny pack that converts into a cross-body bag can be extremely useful for convenience and hands-free movement when traveling to Hawaii. Fanny packs are ideal for on-the-go situations because they are comfortable and small while carrying all of your necessities such as money, phone, and other devices.

Furthermore, they allow you to easily access items without having to dig through your luggage or backpack. With this in mind, they’re the ideal bag for hiking, a boat trip, or even as a personal item on an airplane.

Sunglasses

The sun shines brightly in Hawaii! So, if you don’t bring a good pair of sunglasses, you’ll be sorry. Invest in a pair of polarized sunglasses with UV protection to protect your eyes from the sun.

On your Hawaii vacation, you’ll be spending a lot of time outside. As a result, you’ll need a sun hat to go with your polarized sunglasses for maximum protection.

Hiking Boots

For your Hawaii trip, we highly recommend investing in a pair of sturdy hiking boots with good traction. The KEEN Newport H2 and the Merrell Moab 2 Vent Hiking Shoe, for example, are two of the best hiking shoes for Hawaii.

Because the trails on the islands are frequently muddy and slippery, close-toed shoes are usually the best option. Also, if ziplining or horseback riding are on your itinerary, please remember that both closed-toed shoes and a pair of pants are required. Alternatively, if you prefer open-toed hiking sandals, we recommend Chacos.

Mesh Water Shoes

If you’re not a serious hiker, one of my best travel tips is to forego hiking shoes in favor of water shoes. In fact, there are a few key scenarios where water shoes are required on a Hawaii vacation. For example, if you’re going snorkeling, we strongly recommend them because snorkelers frequently cut their feet on sharp rocks or coral!

You’ll also need water shoes if you plan to go on a road trip and visit some off-the-beaten-path beaches. At these remote locations, it’s common to have to climb over slippery rocks to get into the water. Water shoes are especially useful if you plan to visit any of the black sand beaches, where the sand is particularly hot under your feet.

Flip-Flops

Flip-flops are the perfect shoes to bring with you to the beach or the pool. Furthermore, if they become sandy, they are simple to remove. However, if you intend to go hiking in Hawaii, remember to bring something more durable.

Lightweight Raincoat

The windward side of the Hawaiian islands receives the most rain and, as a result, is greener. With this in mind, if you intend to spend time in these areas, you should bring a packable rain jacket. A light rain jacket can also serve as an extra layer on cool evenings.

Sweatshirt

Although Hawaii is generally warm, you may want to bring a sweatshirt for the plane or your hotel room. Furthermore, depending on the activities you plan to do on your trip, a sweatshirt or jacket may be required. Certain areas can be windy, and higher elevations can be chilly in the mornings or evenings.

For example, if you’re going to Haleakala National Park, you should pack a jacket–preferably a heavy one–on your Maui packing list. Temperatures at the summit lookout range from 30 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit (-1 to +18 degrees Celsius) and can fall below freezing due to wind chill. You should also bring a jacket or sweater to Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island.

What You Should Pack for Hawaii

Too Many Clothing

Laundry service is available in most hotels, and vacation homes and condos have either an in-room washer and dryer or an on-site laundromat. Hand-wash underwear and other quick-drying garments if necessary.

Coat

Year-round, temperatures on the island average in the 70s and 80s Fahrenheit. Bring a light jacket or sweater, but you’re unlikely to wear it. Of course, if you want to stargaze atop Mauna Kea volcano or see the sunrise at Haleakala’s summit, you’ll need warmer clothing because temperatures can drop below 30 degrees Fahrenheit.

Valuables

Leave your expensive watches, jewelry, and other prized possessions at home. Why take the chance of losing them when you’re out and about?

Books

They make excellent beach and flight companions, but they are large and heavy. Load books onto a Kindle or visit your local bookstore.

What is the best time of year to pack and visit Hawaii?

While Hawaii has warm temperatures all year, if you want the best weather, plan your trip between April and October (though keep in mind that hurricane season can last from June to November). If you want to save money, plan your vacation around the “shoulder seasons” of April, May, September, and October.

Those who want to watch pro surfers or go on a whale-watching tour should plan their trip during the winter months. The busiest months for tourism are usually June, July, and December, so the best time to visit Hawaii is really up to you.

Is a car required to get around Hawaii?

Yes. To get around Hawaii, you’ll need a car, and car rentals can add up quickly, so start saving now. While you can always rent a car from a local car shop or a big-name supplier such as Enterprise or Avis, the car rental app Turo is making a big impression in Hawaii. Turo is similar to Airbnb for cars in that it allows you to rent a car from a local Hawaii resident (for a lower price than a standard car rental). I used Turo in Oahu, Maui, and Kauai, and I wasn’t alone — every other tourist I met in Hawaii used Turo as well.

Remember to bring a phone mount if you’re renting a car without an integrated head unit so you can navigate safely.

How much should I pack for a week in Hawaii?

For a weeklong trip to Hawaii, you can travel light. Your itinerary will ultimately guide your choices, but three bathing suits, a cover-up, a few pairs of shorts and tank tops, a sundress, an extra lightweight layer, and a hiking outfit should suffice. Put on a pair of multi-functional sandals and your beach accessories, and you’re ready to go.

Is a jacket required for a summer pack to Hawaii?

Even in August, the weather cools off as the sun sets on the islands, so bring an extra layer of clothing, such as a long-sleeved shirt, hoodie, or light jacket. In addition, afternoon rain showers are common (but brief) in Hawaii, so having a light jacket or an extra piece of clothing can make those five minutes of rain more bearable.
