The terms are “great taste,” “healthy ingredients,” and “eco-friendly practices.” It’s interesting to see that the Chipotle logo has always stood for these great terms since 1993. Many believed a restaurant’s logo must include a chef holding a sauce pan with steam coming out of it. The brown circle sits inside a bugger circle, and white was used to separate each one from the other. Aside from this, the word “chipotle” appears above the brown circle while “Mexican Grill” appears beneath it. Each of the four colors the brand uses for its identification also reflects values. 

Chipotle’s logos are all designed in-house by the company’s graphic artists. But there was a rumor that the latest brand concept was made by experts from Sequence, a studio that focuses on improving user interfaces.

The Chipotle logo represents authentic Mexican cuisine prepared with fresh, all-natural ingredients. Although, the natural ingredients are represented by the smoked and dried jalapenos. Funnily, the fast-chain restaurant was named after the pepper. Because chili peppers are naturally red, this choice of color is spot-on for the subject matter. It also represents passion and vitality. The pepper’s broken lines perfectly capture the delicate nature of the piece.

What is Chipotle’s Motto?

In 2009, following the second iteration of the change, a rectangle was added. The new version of the company’s emblem featured frames that were both square and rectangular. #3. A Circle

In 2009, we saw the debut of the circular version of the company logo. The second Chipotle logo, in all of its iterations, had two concentric circles. Chipotle Logo History

There are three distinct variations of the Chipotle logo since its inception in 1993. The first was merely a simple wordmark. Although simple, it was stylishly unique. 

After about 16 years, the brand came up with a new logo. This time, Chipotle restaurant’s icon of identification was a concentric circle of different colors and the words “Chipotle” (at the top) and “Mexican Grille” (below) debuted (bottom). The font used has a rigid, geometric feel to it.  The heart of the circle was dominated by a large hot pepper white drawing. 1993 – 2009: Wordmark

Every single brand is aware of how essential it is to have a recognizable icon or symbol that reflects the company. Therefore, it was no surprise when Chipotle restaurant got one in 1993. Chipotle restaurant’s first logo for a new restaurant was very simple and had an air of competence about it. It was a wordmark, composed of two different words put together. The first one was “Chipotle,” which is the name of the company, and the second one was “Mexican Grill.” Mexican Grill was written in a smaller typeface directly beneath Chipotle, which was written in a larger font that resembled Papyrus.  Because the initial section is intended to stand out aesthetically, the letters have been constructed in a distinctive manner: they are quite lengthy and have rough edges. On the other hand, the phrase that comes below it is polished, well-chopped, and uniform.

The company Chipotle made the decision to redesign its logo 16 years after it first opened its doors. At that time, the company was doing very well, significantly better than when it had originally begun operating in a number of states across the country with multiple locations. The wordmark was replaced with a medallion that has a thin white edge, a circle that is black on the outside, and a circle that is red on the interior. The name was written in capital white letters, and the font that was used to write “Mexican Grill” in the design that was used in 1993 was used again in 2009. In 1993, the first restaurant in what would become a chain called Chiople opened in a suburb of Denver in the state of Colorado. Founder

The Chipotle restaurant was founded by Steve Ells in 1993. He was a chef at Stars restaurant before opening Chipotle. In 1993, he started his own restaurant in Denver, Colorado. Luckily, he has a father who believes in his vision, and with his help, opening the new restaurant was possible.

Funding From Inception

Steve only has little savings and a dream. Luckily, he has a father who believes so much in the vision of his son. Bob Ells gave his son $75,000 as support to start the business. By 1996, Steve Ells had raised an additional $1.3 million. The young man wanted to expand his dream to another place but he can only get to 16 at this point. 

Light At The End Of The Tunnel

A friend of Bob Ells came through with the right connection, and Steve was invited to McDonald’s headquarters in Illinois, where he cooked up a sample of Chipotle’s food. There’s this local cliche that says, “A trial will convince you it was with the Golden Arches executives.” They were wowed by the outcome, and he got the investment he so much desired. The details were worked out over the course of a year, and in 1998, McDonald’s invested $50 million in Chipotle’s growth. This was merely 5 years after it was launched in 1993. With access to McDonald’s wealth of knowledge and funding, Chipotle grew and expanded its branches across the state. It also extended its brand to international countries.

Chipotle was completely removed from McDonald’s portfolio in October 2006. While the public was told McDonald’s planned to divest all of its non-core business outlets, to focus on its main chain, rumor has it that the two brands were at loggerhead. McDonald’s was pumping in the momoney with the hope that the brand will dance to every instruction but they seem stubborn and unbendable. 

Chipotle was acquired by McDonald’s for around $1.5 billion, following an investment by McDonald’s of approximately $360 million. 

Chipotle’s International Journey

According to an article published by The Motley Fool in October 2014, Chipotle had launched 17 locations in nations other than the United States, with the majority of these establishments being located in Canada. At that time, locations all over the UK were making plans to grow. Growth in other regions of the world took place, although it required significantly more time than was projected. The majority of the press was of the opinion that the prices were excessive when compared to those of eateries in the area.

#1. Canada

In August of 2008, Chipotle opened its first restaurant outside the United States of America in the city of Toronto, Canada. 2010 saw the opening of a second facility, this time in Toronto. The city of Vancouver, British Columbia, opened its doors in December 2012, making it the first city in Canada to do so, beating out both Montreal and Quebec City. In October 2014, a second site, this one in Burnaby, was opened for business. Another store, this one in Surrey, opened at the start of the new year. In February 2017, the Rideau Centre was the first establishment in Ottawa to open its doors to the public.

#2. France

In May of 2012, the Paris location made its debut as the first store in the country. The rate of economic expansion in France was noticeably lower than that of Britain and Canada. 2014 saw the launch of not just a second but also a third location, with the second one being located in Paris. In terms of square footage, the Chipotle that debuted in 2014 in La Défense, France, was the largest in the world.

It measured 7,000 square feet (650 square meters), while the normal Chipotle is between 2,200 square feet (200 square meters) and 2,500 square feet (240 square meters) (230 m2). The following year (2015) saw the opening of a location in Levallois-Perret, and the following year saw the opening of a location in Saint-Germain-des-Prés. In the year 2021, the corporation opened its seventh store in France, which marked the beginning of its expansion outside of the Paris metropolitan area. It took hold in Lyon, in the largest shopping mall in Europe.

#3. United Kingdom

Baker Street is home to the second Chipotle Mexican Grill location that can be found in the city of London. In May 2010, London saw the opening of the first Chipotle restaurant in Europe. In September 2011, a second facility, this one in London, opened for business. The next year, the company grew quickly, and three new facilities were opened in and around London. After such a fast expansion, London’s rate of population growth slowed down significantly.

There are currently seven sites, the sixth of which opened its doors in 2013 and the most recent of which opened in June 2015. Chipotle says that the United Kingdom’s lack of interest in its plans to grow there is because people there don’t know much about Mexican food. During the same time period, however, a large number of burrito franchises that were privately held appeared all throughout the UK.

The first store in Germany was launched in August 2013, and it was located in the Skyline Plaza in Frankfurt. In April 2019, another outlet opened up in the MyZeil shopping mall in Frankfurt.

Chipotle Lawsuits

Like the majority of brands that have been around for a while, Chipotle has been the target of multiple lawsuits. Let’s look at a few of these, shall we?

False Nutritional information

According to Chipotle’s nutrition calculator, a chorizo burrito was advertised as having 300 calories. Unfortunately, it turned out it really had more than 1,000 calories.
