It turns out Walmart had announced its thanksgiving holiday store hours on June 4th, 2021, and it’s now official for subsequent years: Walmart will not be operating on Thanksgiving Day. This isn’t surprising, given that the business was also shuttered on Christmas Eve in 2020, during the height of national lockdowns and Thanksgiving in 2023. “Our people make the difference,” said Dacona Smith, executive vice president, and chief operating officer of Walmart U.S., in a statement released on June 4. “One way we’re saying ‘thank you to our teams for their devotion and hard work this year is by closing our stores on Thanksgiving Day.” On Wednesday, Nov. 24, stores are scheduled to remain open as usual, and Walmart Black Friday hours have yet to be published.

The business may be closed for the third year in a row on Thanksgiving Day. The decision to remain closed was taken in 2020 as a way to recognize employees for their dedication during a tough period. According to NBC, it was the first time the business has been shuttered on Thanksgiving in 30 years. “We recognize that this has been a difficult year, and our associates have stood up to the plate. In a statement at the time, John Furner, president and CEO of Walmart U.S., said, “We hope they will enjoy a special Thanksgiving Day at home with their loved ones.”

Best Buy
Back in June, Best Buy announced that it would be closed on Thanksgiving. While it hasn’t specified when it will open for Black Friday, it has confirmed that it would begin its sale a week before the big day – on Nov. 19.
BJ’s Wholesale Club
According to a press release issued on Oct. 12, BJ’s will be closed on Thanksgiving for the 15th year in a row.
The store’s Black Friday opening time has already been confirmed: 7 a.m. According to the press release, on Nov. 26, in-store purchasing will include a “treasure-hunt experience.” Early Black Friday deals, on the other hand, will begin on November 4 and run through November 29. Costco
There are no surprises here. Even before COVID-19, Costco has always been closed on Thanksgiving. It’s also one among the few major stores that remain open on government holidays such as New Year’s Day and Labor Day.
Dick’s Sporting Goods
Dick’s Sporting Goods, a long-time member of the Open on Thanksgiving club, said in February that it would close stores and distribution sites for Thanksgiving 2023. For Black Friday, stores will reopen, but no hours have been set.
Kohl’s
Kohl’s confirmed in a June press statement that it will be closed on Thanksgiving 2023. However, it guarantees deals on Kohls.com and through the Kohl’s app.
REI
This year, both Thanksgiving and Black Friday will be closed at the outdoor and sporting goods retailer. REI has been closed on both days for the past seven years (while continuing to pay its staff) and urges customers to #OptOutside instead.
Target
Target was the first retailer to announce (in January) that it would be closed on Thanksgiving in 2023. What is the logic behind it? According to a press announcement announcing the closure, customers preferred it.
Walmart
Every year, Walmart’s Black Friday sale is one of the most anticipated. However, in 2023 no retailers may be open on Thanksgiving. As a thank-you to its staff, Walmart announced in June that all of its stores would be closed on Nov. 25. On Thanksgiving Day, however, expect to be able to shop for offers online.
Walmart has also announced that it will be holding early Black Friday sales throughout November, with deals starting at 5 a.m. on November 5 and 12.
Simon Shopping Centers
On Oct. 8, Simon Facilities, which owns 168 malls and shops in the United States, declared that all of its domestic properties would be closed on Thanksgiving Day 2023. For Black Friday, properties will reopen. Because department stores attached to malls (like Macy’s) typically have their own outdoor entrances, they can operate independently. Stores within the closed malls, on the other hand, will remain closed.

Thanksgiving Day: Are Grocery Stores Open?
In general, grocery stores will be open on Thanksgiving; however, you may need to shop early, as many stores have limited hours and may close before Thanksgiving dinner.
In the past, Wegmans and Whole Foods stayed open until 4 p.m. on Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving hours at Kroger, Food Lion, and Safeway tended to run through the morning, with most stores closing by dinnertime.
However, not every supermarket will be open for your last-minute shopping trip. Because Aldi, Trader Joe’s, and Lidl are usually closed on Thanksgiving, you’ll have to stock up on last-minute ingredients the night before.

#4. CVS

The hours of operation for the Midwest chain will vary by location, with some stores closing at 2 p.m. Before going out for last-minute groceries, stay safe and call your local Hy-Vee.

On Thanksgiving, most Krogers are open from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m., while some are open 24 hours a day.
