Clearcover Car Insurance Review

Clearcover Car Insurance

Clearcover is an excellent choice if you’re looking for a car insurance company with a frictionless digital experience and rates that don’t break the bank. The insurer is also known for quick, same-day claims compensation, while other insurers may take weeks.

However, Clearcover is only available in certain states and offers limited coverage options. Also, Clearcover’s small presence compared to insurance giants like GEICO, State Farm, and other top cheap car insurance providers may raise concerns, and it has more customer complaints than average according to third-party sites.

That said, the company has an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau (BBB), which could reassure customers who are on the fence.

Overview of Clearcover Car Insurance

Clearcover launched in 2018 in California. One of its investors is American Family Ventures, the investment arm of American Family Insurance.

The company costs less than major companies like Geico and State Farm. Its coverage options are fairly basic, but there are a few great add-ons. One unique option is alternate transport coverage, which will pay for a rental car, rideshare services or public transportation if you can’t drive your car after an accident.

Clearcover sells car insurance in 19 states:

  • Alabama
  • Arizona
  • Georgia
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Kentucky
  • Louisiana
  • Maryland
  • Mississippi
  • Missouri
  • Nebraska
  • Ohio
  • Oklahoma
  • Pennsylvania
  • Texas
  • Utah
  • Virginia
  • West Virginia
  • Wisconsin

Clearcover sells only six-month car insurance policies. The company believes that it can provide the most accurate pricing by evaluating your driving record twice a year rather than annually. This also means that if you cause an accident or get a speeding ticket, you’ll pay an increased rate sooner.

Clearcover’s user-friendly website makes it easy to get a quote in a few minutes.

Clearcover Car Insurance

Clearcover offers all the typical car insurance coverage types that drivers will find at other car insurance companies.

Liability car insurance

Liability auto insurance pays the medical expenses for other people’s injuries and property damage in an accident that you cause. It also covers your legal expenses if someone sues you over a car accident.

Comprehensive car insurance

Comprehensive insurance pays to repair or replace your car if damaged by a problem such as fire, vandalism, flooding, falling objects, hail or animal collisions. It also pays out if your car is stolen.

Collision car insurance

Collision insurance pays to repair or replace your car when it’s been damaged in an accident, regardless of fault. It also pays for your car’s damage if you hit an object (such as a fence or tree).

Comprehensive and collision insurance are optional and often sold together. If you have a car loan or lease, your lender or leasing company will likely require you to buy them.

Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

PIP coverage pays for medical bills and other health care costs if you or your passengers are injured in an accident, regardless of who’s at fault. It also covers funeral expenses, lost wages, and pays for basic services such as child care. Personal injury protection insurance is required in 15 states, optional in other states and unavailable in some.

Uninsured/Underinsured motorist insurance

Uninsured motorist coverage pays for your medical bills if a driver who doesn’t have liability insurance causes an accident that injures you or your passengers. Underinsured motorist coverage pays for you and your passengers’ medical bills if you are hit by a driver who does not have enough liability insurance.

This coverage is required in 22 states and optional in other states.

Medical Payments Insurance (MedPay)

Medical payments coverage (MedPay) pays for medical expenses for injuries to you and your passengers, no matter who’s at fault for the accident. It’s required in some states and optional in others. MedPay is usually sold in small amounts between $1,000 and $5,000.

Other coverage types from Clearcover car insurance

You can buy additional coverage to pay for other types of problems, such as rental reimbursement insurance if your car is in the shop or roadside service if your car is disabled:

  • Alternate transportation coverage. This kicks in if you’re unable to drive your car due to an incident covered by your policy. Under this coverage, you receive money for carpooling, rideshare services, public transit or rental cars. There’s a per day and per incident maximum. For example, if you buy $30/$900 alternate transportation coverage, Clearcover will pay $30 per day, up to $900 per incident, for alternate transportation.
  • Rideshare insurance. This covers you while driving for Uber and Lyft, and provides coverage when your app is on but you haven’t agreed yet to pick up a passenger. (Clearcover’s rideshare coverage doesn’t protect you if you work for a delivery service like GrubHub or DoorDash.)
  • Roadside assistance service. This will tow your car to the nearest qualified repair shop if your vehicle breaks down. Clearcover’s roadside assistance insurance covers up to three automotive emergencies for each six-month policy period. Those emergencies can include battery failures, flat tires, or mechanical breakdowns.

How to file a claim with Clearcover

Clearcover’s innovative technology allows for quick claims processing. You may receive compensation in as little as seven minutes.

Clearcover’s claims process is also relatively simple. Submit pictures of your vehicle’s damages and answer a few questions on Clearcover’s mobile app. If you don’t want to file a claim online, call 855-444-1875 to speak to a live representative.

If you aren’t a Clearcover member, you can file a claim against a policyholder by calling 855-444-1875 and selecting option 4. You should have the policyholder’s name, policy number, incident date, and police report number (if applicable) on hand.

Clearcover car insurance discounts

Unlike many other car insurance companies, Clearcover doesn’t offer an array of car insurance discounts. Rather, it says it builds discounts into its regular pricing. Instead of rewarding you with discounts for things like safe driving, paying in full, online billing or vehicle safety features, Clearcover says it automatically factors in these items.

Clearcover does, however, offer a 15% discount for active-duty military personnel. It offers an additional 25% discount for Louisiana drivers who are on active duty, as well as for their children under age 25.

Where Clearcover stands out

  • Digital-first experience. Users who prefer doing everything online will love Clearcover’s highly-rated app and seamless website experience.
  • Quick claims process. Clearcover makes the claims process easy, letting customers submit and track claims through its app. Generally, most claims are paid out in less than a week. Clearcover’s quickest payout was made in seven minutes, according to their website.

Where Clearcover falls short

  • Limited state availability. Clearcover is offered in only 19 states nationwide.
  • No opportunities to bundle insurance. Product offerings are limited to auto insurance, so if you’re looking to get all your insurance products from one place, you may want to look at other companies. However, Clearcover’s partner, Hippo, sells home and condo insurance.

Clearcover customer service reviews, ratings and financial stability

Choosing a company with a strong customer service reputation is important. After an accident, reliable customer service can help you get back on the road quickly, while poor service can make claims and getting back to your routine take longer than necessary. As Clearcover has only been selling insurance for a few years, it doesn’t have as many customer reviews as more familiar brands such as State Farm.

Clearcover’s lack of reviews from industry leaders makes it difficult to know what to expect if you have an emergency and need to use your insurance policy.

The company is not rated by J.D. Power or the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). However, reviews from sources like the Better Business Bureau and Trustpilot tend to be positive. It received an “A” rating for financial stability from Demotech (an alternative to AM Best), which means that it has an “exceptional” ability to pay out claims, even in difficult economic times.

This is the third-best rating available from Demotech.

Clearcover provides online quotes, and it has a smartphone app, both of which are easy to use. Unfortunately, the process is a little disjointed: Many important activities related to your car insurance policy can only be done on the website or the app, but not both.

Other Clearcover tools and benefits

Clearcover’s highly-rated app is central to its services, allowing you to access 24/7 support, file claims and access all your insurance documents.

It also has a unique initiative to help drivers save on maintenance. Car Care gives policyholders up to 40 percent off at more than 23,000 maintenance shops throughout the U.S. Using the Clearcover app, drivers can compare the prices for service at nearby shops and book appointments online instantly.

Car Care also allows drivers to track auto maintenance and access a network of expert mechanics to troubleshoot common problems. It is currently only available in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Arizona and Utah, but Clearcover hopes to expand the program to more states in the future.

The Clearcover app experience has positive feedback among users, earning high marks in both the Google Play store and the Apple App Store for its iOS version. That should make contacting customer service or filing a claim much easier for drivers who prefer not to deal with an agent over the phone.

Does Clearcover car insurance offer SR-22s?

No, Clearcover car insurance doesn’t have SR-22 insurance.
