The concept behind the new Apple iOS 17 Contact Posters is simple: instead of displaying whatever name you’re stored as on a friend’s or family member’s phone, Contact Posters allow you to customize the image and name that people see when you call.
This gives you the luxury of not only changing your name but also adding a full-screen photo or memoji and other effects to help you see who’s calling at a glance. In turn, it will appear on any iPhone running iOS 17 when you call them.
It’s a cool new feature for iPhone users who have installed the iOS 17 update, but in typical Apple fashion, you won’t be prompted to enable it. Instead, you’ll have to figure out how to set up your Contact Poster yourself after you have installed iOS 17.
Fortunately, you no longer have to figure that out on your own. In the next few paragraphs, I’ll walk you through exactly what you need to do to set up a Contact Poster in iOS 17. I will also provide you with the information you’ll need to navigate other related iOS 17 features, like the NameDrop.
Let’s set the ball rolling…
How To Set Up Contact Poster iOS 17: Overview
With iOS 17, Apple has added a number of new features to the iPhone, one of which is Contact Poster, which allows you to create your own digital calling card using images, colors, and text.
Here’s how it works: when you call someone from iPhone to iPhone and are in their contacts, your Contact Poster appears on their screen. It replaces the previous much smaller notification and thumbnail picture and allows you to be more creative with how you want to appear to your friends, family, or colleagues.
While setting up your Contact Poster, you can also modify your Apple ID avatar to reflect the poster. If you go into Settings on your iPhone or Mac, for example, you’ll notice that you can change your profile picture to match whatever you’ve set up as your Contact Poster, whether that’s a new image you’ve taken or a specific Memoji.
Where Can You Find Your Contact Poster Settings?
To access the Contact Poster settings in iOS 17, follow these steps:
- Launch the Contacts app.
- At the top of the contacts list, tap on your name.
- Select Contact Photo and Poster.
The first thing you’ll notice is your Contact Poster options, which include whether you want to share your name and photo at all, the first and last name you want to use, and whether you want iOS to automatically share your posters with everyone in your contact list or to ask you every time you call someone in your contact list.
How to Set Up Contact Poster in iOS 17
To set up a new Contact Poster, follow these steps:
- Launch the Contacts app.
- At the top of the contacts list, tap on your name and Edit.
- Select Edit, then the + (plus) sign. Swiping right reveals a Create New option on the far right of your existing Contact Posters, which you can use instead.
- Choose Camera (to create a new photo), Photos (to use an existing photo), Memoji, or Monogram (to use text) at the bottom of the screen to create the type of Contact Poster you want.
When you create a new Contact Poster with a Camera or Photos:
- Take a new photograph or choose one from your collection.
- Swipe left or right to change image and font styles.
- To change the color for any effect, tap the color swab (lower right). (It will not be available for your original photograph or, logically, a black-and-white photograph.)
- To change the zoom and crop, pinch in or out on the photo.
- To change the font style, thickness, and color, tap the text at the top.
When you create a new Contact Poster with Memoji:
- Tap + (plus) to create a new Memoji or select one from the pop-up window.
- Once you’ve created a new Memoji or a variation on an existing one, you can either select an expression or tap the camera icon to pull and save an expression of your own.
- On the next screen, you can choose a background color by tapping the color swab (lower left), changing the Memoji image while keeping the expression (first lower right icon), or turning the depth effect on or off (second lower right icon).
- To change the font style, thickness, and color, tap the text at the top.
When you create a new Contact Poster with a Monogram:
- First use the color swab (lower left) to pick a background color.
- To change the font style, thickness, and color, tap the text at the top.
- To change the large lettering in the center of the poster, tap the letter(s) in the lower right. You can enter one or two characters (such as your initials).
Whatever type of Contact Poster you’re making, when you’re finished, tap Done and then Continue on the preview screen.
You’ll then be taken to the Contact Photo page, where you can use your new Contact Poster to update your main contact photo, which is used for your Apple ID across all of your devices and in other people’s contact lists. If you don’t want to do it, tap Skip; otherwise, tap Continue. (You can also choose Choose a Different Photo from the Continue menu.)
If you choose Skip or Continue, you’ll be taken back to the screen where you first selected Contact Photo & Poster, and your new Contact Poster will be saved.
How to Change Your Contact Poster
To switch between and customize the various Contact Posters you’ve created:
- Return to Contacts, tap on your name, and then select Contact Photo & Poster.
- Tap Edit once more.
- Swipe left or right to select a Contact Poster or “Customize” to make changes to one.
- When you select Customize, you can then select Contact Photo or Poster, and you’ll be taken back to the previous screens. Swipe up on a Contact Poster to delete it, then tap the red trash can icon that appears.
It’s also worth noting that Contact Posters integrate with another new iOS 17 feature, NameDrop. Bring your iPhone close to someone else’s iPhone or Apple Watch, and assuming both devices have Bluetooth enabled, you should get a prompt asking if you want to transfer your contact information.
This prompt shows the Contact Poster you’ve set as your default, and once the contact information is shared, your Contact Poster appears on the other person’s iPhone as well.
How to Make Your Own Contact Poster in iOS 17
When you first launch the Phone app on an iPhone running iOS 17, you will be prompted to update your name and photo. You can also set it up at a later time. Here are the steps for creating a contact poster on iOS 17.

- Finally, tap Use to associate this contact poster with your Apple ID and My Card.
How to Create Contact Posters for Others in iOS 17

- In the top-right corner, tap Edit.
- Select Add Photo.
- Now, from the options, choose Camera, Photos, Memoji, or Monogram.
- Select your preferred text and style options and click the Next button.
When you tap Customize Poster, you will be taken to the Choose Your Poster page.
- Once again choose from the four options on your phone: Camera, Photos, Memoji, and Monogram.
- Make any necessary changes and then click Done. Your iPhone will now display a preview of the Contact Poster you just made.
- Select Continue to use this poster or Back to make additional changes.
- Finally, press the Done button.
