Is the Post Office Open on Christmas Eve?
This year, it will be different! Typically, the United States Postal Service (USPS) remains open on Christmas Eve because the mailing service observes Christmas Day as a holiday instead. In 2023, however, Christmas Eve falls on a Sunday. Because the post office is closed on Sundays, it will be closed on Christmas Eve in 2023.
When it comes to the blue collection boxes, it’s important to remember that mail should be dropped off on the day before Christmas Eve this year (Saturday, December 23), which is likely earlier than usual.
Is the Post Office Open on Christmas?
According to the USPS, the post office will be closed on Christmas Day, which falls on Monday, December 25 this year. This includes the blue collection boxes, which will not have their regular mail picked up or delivered.
However, we must point out that there is a technical exception when it comes to Priority Mail Express®. Every year, some locations will deliver mail in this category without a guarantee, unless the post office specifically contacts you about your delivery and states otherwise.

FedEx, FedEx Ground, FedEx Ground Economy, and FedEx Freight services are all closed on Christmas Eve, in accordance with their holiday schedule.
FedEx Express will operate with modified service on Christmas Eve, including early station openings, on-call pickups, and dropbox closures in some areas. FedEx Office hours have changed, but FedEx SameDay City, FedEx Custom Critical, and FedEx Trade Networks will remain open.
#2. UPS
UPS will offer a variety of services on Christmas Eve.
UPS delivery is available for all services. UPS® pickup for domestic and international air services is only available if scheduled by December 21, with no ground service pickup.
Some UPS store locations may have modified business hours on Christmas Eve, so check with your local store before heading out to mail something.
#3. DHL

What if My Post Office Is Closed and I Need to Mail Something?
While most businesses are closed on Christmas Eve, FedEx will be open until 6 p.m. on both Christmas and New Year’s Eve.
FedEx offices will be closed on Christmas and New Year’s Day.
UPS will be open on Christmas and New Year’s Eve but will be closed on Christmas and New Year’s Day.
Amazon delivery will be unavailable on Christmas and New Year’s Day.
USPS New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day schedule
On New Year’s Eve, December 31st, all USPS post office locations will be open and providing delivery. Because January 1st, New Year’s Day, is a federal holiday, all USPS post offices will be closed. Regular mail delivery will be suspended, as it is on Christmas Day, and only Priority Mail Express will be available. On Monday, January 3rd, regular mail delivery will resume.
Holiday Shipping Deadlines
If you put off your holiday shopping, you may find yourself fighting crowds the weekend before Christmas. Because many retailers have limited in-store inventory, it’s best to plan ahead of time by checking online inventory at big box stores.
Keep in mind that FedEx, UPS, and USPS all have different shipping deadlines for guaranteed Christmas delivery. The longer you wait, the more money you’ll have to pay for expedited shipping.
