In the non-digital world, a sprint is a brief race that is run quickly. Alternatively, it could be a brief period of extremely fast running that isn’t part of a race, similar to when a runner decides to put on a final spurt of speed for a strong finish as they approach the end of a three-mile run.

The demand for new applications has increased as society becomes more digital, so the quicker a company can release a trustworthy, practical app, the better. 

You could say that software firms are vying to keep up with consumer demand!

So in this article, we will look at the definition of sprints, the need for them, their advantages, and their cycles and processes. 

Let’s start with the fundamentals and define what an agile sprint is.

What are Sprints in Agile?

Agile projects are divided into short, repeatable phases called “sprints” or “iterations,” which are typically one to four weeks long.

A draft, prototype, or usable version of the final deliverable should be produced at the end of each sprint, which should be decided upon at the start of the project. Projects are divided into manageable pieces during sprints. 

Note that: 

  • Teams only plan one sprint at a time, and they make adjustments for subsequent sprints based on the results of the previous one.
  • The number and duration of your project’s sprints should be decided at the beginning, even though each sprint is planned separately. 
  • In an Agile project management process, a Scrum team works in small iterations with the project stakeholders. 
  • Teams break down complicated projects into manageable chunks of work called sprints using the Scrum framework. 
  • The Scrum methodology enables the team to quickly adapt to changes as a result of these sprints.
  • Each project is divided into sprints, and each sprint is worked on independently by the team. Up to four weeks can pass between sprints. The most typical sprint duration is two weeks. 
  • Development teams work together in a Scrum meeting as the sprint progresses to monitor their performance and, if necessary, make adjustments. 

Finally, after a sprint, development teams review the work that has been completed. Teams develop the following sprint strategy using comments and feedback from sprint reviews.

How Many Sprints are in Agile?

An organization’s long-term objective is its product vision. The intermediate steps that help the organization get to its ultimate vision are called product goals. 

Therefore, product goals have intermediate steps called sprint goals. Teams establish the sprint goals during the sprint planning phase, and they are evaluated during the sprint retrospective phase.

The sprint goals may adjust as the requirements and product issues change. The tasks that the Scrum team has listed are in the sprint backlog.

  • Product vision: This is used to offer the pipeline industry solutions for defect detection.
  • Product goal: This is used to develop a deep learning model to analyze images and find pipe flaws.
  • Sprint goal: This is used to raise the model’s accuracy to greater than 95%. to improve the usability of the user interface (UI).
  • Sprint backlog: This increases the model’s accuracy to over 95% by enhancing the training dataset, using transformations, and utilizing transfer learning. To make the main page more user-friendly, redesign it and clear out the clutter.

What are the 4 Steps Within a Sprint?

To create a sprint, adhere to these steps:

#1. Plan the sprint

When a new sprint starts, the team holds a sprint planning meeting. This meeting is attended by the product owner, the product owner’s representative, and the scrum master. 

The project’s current backlog is discussed, and the product owner helps assign tasks to a higher priority. 

The development team chooses which items from the backlog to complete during each sprint. 

Then team members come up with plans to finish tasks that are on hold and, when necessary, adjust for changing requirements. 

Finally, they move the project backlog tasks to the sprint backlog during the sprint and concentrate on finishing those tasks.

#2. Monitor the progress.

Staff members can follow the team’s progress and address any issues they may have thanks to daily check-ins during the sprint. 

The informal meeting, which starts the workday, takes place at that time. In this meeting, the staff members provide updates on their work progress and daily plans. 

Furthermore, participants may suggest alternatives to current problems, voice concerns, and offer solutions to boost productivity.

#3. Focus on execution.

The execution phase receives the majority of the teams’ attention during the sprint. This includes all work the team does to complete the sprint backlog, and it lasts the entire sprint. 

Daily scrums are used by the team to communicate expectations and brainstorm ways to make improvements. 

The product owner typically gives the team feedback, responds to inquiries, offers direction, and evaluates interim work. 

Lastly, when unexpected events occur or the client requests a change, the product owner may also talk about modifying the sprint goal.

#4. Conduct the sprint review.

This review assesses the product’s newest features as well as its plans. This allows for better visibility, control, and risk management than traditional software development life cycles.

Below is a sprint review meeting agenda:

  • Welcoming the participants
  • Presenting the sprint review’s schedule
  • Displaying the demo that the team created during the execution stage.
  • Get feedback from the stakeholders.
  • Examining the product backlog, receiving comments, and making suggestions for the upcoming sprint.
  • Setting the delivery date and concluding the meeting with action items. 

What are the Types of Sprints?

These are the four most typical types of Agile meetings, though there are others. Agile meetings are also sometimes called “ceremonies” or “Scrum events.”

There are four types of sprints:

#1. Sprint planning meeting

What it is: During the sprint planning session, the Scrum team discusses the tasks they want to complete during the subsequent sprint and assigns a priority to each task.

Meeting goals: 

  • Establish the goals for the following sprint (what features should be developed).
  • Separate responsibilities and tasks.

Who should attend:

  • Product owner
  • Scrum master
  • Development team

According to the advice, you should plan two hours of meeting time for each week of your sprint. The length of your sprint planning meeting should be four hours if your team works in two-week sprints. 

However, limit meetings to eight hours as anything more complicated would be too long.

#2. Daily stand-up meeting

What it is: Throughout the sprint, there are daily Agile standup meetings. A quick check-in is conducted to see what each team member is working on, how the process is going for them, and any obstacles they are facing.

Additionally, this is an opportunity for the daily process (and ultimately end-product) improvement.

Meeting goals: 

  • Discuss the status of the sprint’s work.
  • Identify obstacles and barriers to work.

Who should attend: 

  • Development team

How long it lasts: a maximum of 15 minutes.

#3. Sprint review meeting

Sprint reviews and sprint retrospectives are two distinct processes that are frequently confused.

The development team presents the work that was completed during the sprint (often with a demonstration) during the sprint review to gather as much feedback as possible.

Meeting goals: 

  • Take feedback

Who should attend:

  • Product owner
  • Scrum master
  • Development team
  • All necessary parties

How long it lasts: It is advised to set aside an hour for each sprint week. Therefore, your sprint review should last two hours if your sprint lasted two weeks. You shouldn’t go over four hours for your sprint review.

#4. Sprint retrospective meeting

The Scrum team pays close attention to their collaborative work during a sprint retrospective rather than just the final product or output. 

Therefore, the team should decide on actions to take to enhance collaboration at the end of each sprint retrospective.

Meeting goals: 

  • Review the previous sprint and determine what worked and what didn’t.
  • Identify initiatives to enhance the upcoming sprint.

Who should attend:

  • Scrum master for the development team

How long it lasts: It is advised to allow 45 minutes for each week of your sprint. You would have an hour and a half for your sprint retrospective, using our two-week sprint as an example. Retrospectives for sprints shouldn’t last more than three hours.

How Do I Run an Agile Sprint?

Preparing for a sprint planning meeting helps streamline collaboration and deliverables.

Here’s how to get started:

#1. Prepare your backlog.

Product owners should prioritize backlog refinement before sprint planning meetings. Scrum teams should have an up-to-date backlog to stay organized and on the same page.

To prepare the backlog and choose the tasks to complete during the upcoming sprint, you might even decide to hold a pre-planning meeting. 

Only the Scrum master and the product owner will be required to attend this meeting; the rest of the development team is optional.

You’ll be able to make better use of the limited time allotted to planning your sprint if you can prepare your backlog more before your sprint planning meeting.

#2. Check the team’s accessibility.

Make sure to consider your team’s ability to complete the suggested workload before making a full commitment to a sprint schedule. 

Confirm any planned vacation time, commitments to other projects, and any other potential time constraints by asking team members. Adapt the workload if team members are unable to fully commit to the sprint workload.

Agile sprint planning should consider team availability, resources, and any known issues before starting.

#3. Identify your team’s speed.

The amount of work that a team can finish in one sprint is a measure of their velocity. The amount that your team should accomplish during any given sprint isn’t standardized. 

Track team deliverables and story point to gauge velocity.

#4. Schedule the sprint planning meeting.

The sprint planning meeting should be handled by the scrum master. Choosing the meeting’s date, time, and participants is part of this preparation.

The Scrum master should determine the agenda and distribute it to team members, product owners, and stakeholders.

What is Scrum vs Sprint?

The purpose of a sprint is one of the key distinctions between an entire Scrum framework and a single sprint within a process. 

The Scrum framework’s goal is to define the necessary project criteria in the roles, meeting times, resources, and project schedules you establish for your team.

In contrast, the goal of a sprint is to start, finish, and deliver software products to continue providing software packages to clients throughout the entire software development process. 

Therefore, it’s critical to define the overall project parameters when setting the goals for the Scrum process, while a sprint goal guides teams to complete each stage of the project.
