One of the best cloud software alternatives to desktop word processors is Google Docs. Basically, you can use the cloud app to create documents that include tables, charts, hyperlinks, YouTube videos, images, and other elements. Sure, it still has fewer text formatting options and tools than MS Word, but Google Docs is improving all the time. However, one notable option is still missing from its picture context menu. The question on everyone’s lips remains, ” Where is the “save image as” option in Google Docs?

Unfortunately, because Google Docs is in editing mode, there is no “Save image as” option to download selected images when you right-click them. As a result, you get Copy, Cut, Save in Keep, and so on. In other words, there is no way to select and download images from a document directly. Nonetheless, there are a few ways to download specific images from open Google Docs documents. Let’s go over the processes in detail, one after the other.

Note: The following process is applicable on iPhones, Androids, Macs, and Chromebooks.

Method 1: How to Save Images From Google Docs on iPhone

All you need are the Google Docs and Notes apps. Here’s how you do it:

  • Launch the Google Docs app and open the document. Long-press the image you want to save, then let go and choose Copy.
  • Open Notes and paste the image into a new or existing note. Select Paste after tapping and holding a blank space in the note.
  • Tap the image, then tap the share icon in the bottom-left corner to save it.
  • The image will be downloaded to your iPhone or iPad, and you should see it in the Photos app.

Method 2: Save Google Docs Images on Android

Unlike on iOS, you cannot save a single image from a document in the Google Docs app. You’ll need to use Google Drive to save all of the images in the document to your device’s storage.

  • Open the Google Docs app, tap the document’s menu icon, and then select Send a copy.
Tap OK after selecting Web page (.html, zipped).
  • To upload the zipped image file to your Google Drive account, choose Drive from the share menu.
Give the document a suitable name, choose the Drive folder to which the file should be saved, and then tap Save.
  • When the upload is finished, go to your Drive account, find the file, tap the menu icon, and then choose Download.
  • Extract the images from the zip file using the Files app or any third-party file manager.

Method 3: Save Images From Google Docs Using Google Keep

Google Keep is one of many Google add-ons that work with Google Docs. The add-on primarily allows users to insert Google Keep notes into documents and save document excerpts as notes.

Google Keep also has a handy trick for saving images in a Google Docs document or presentation. Here’s how to use this add-on:

  • Open the document, right-click the image to save, and then choose Save to Keep.
  • Google Docs will create a Note file with the selected image as the content in the right sidebar.
  • Save the image by right-clicking it and selecting Save Image As.
  • Give the image a name and then click Save.
  • After saving the image to your computer, delete it from your Google Keep notepad.
  • Select the three-dot menu icon by hovering your mouse over the image in the Google Keep section.

To remove the image from Google Keep, click Delete.

Method 4: Extract All Images as a Web Page File

Do you want to download all of the images in a Google Docs file at once? It is sufficient to save the file as an HTML webpage. The operation saves the document as a ZIP file containing two files: an HTML text file and a folder containing all of the document’s images.

Open the Google Docs file, then choose File from the Toolbar, Download, and Web Page (.html, zipped).

To extract the embedded folders, save the ZIP file to your computer and unzip it.
To view all images in the Google Docs file, open the (unzipped) folder and then the images folder.

It’s worth noting that the images in the folder aren’t in the order that they appear in the Google document. Similarly, the images do not bear their original names. They are given a random image name and number generated by Google.

Method 5: Save Google Docs Images Using Microsoft Word

  • Export the Google Docs file to Word and save the images in the document to your computer.
  • Open the Google Docs file, then select File from the toolbar, Download, and Microsoft Word (.docx).
  • When the download is complete, save the Word document to your computer and open it in Microsoft Word.
To save an image from a document, right-click it and choose Save as Picture.

If desired, rename the image file and choose a storage location. Microsoft Word also allows you to save the image in a variety of formats, including PNG, JPEG, BMP, and GIF. Select Save after selecting your preferred image format from the “Save as Type” drop-down menu.

  • To save all of the images in the document, go to the File menu and select Save As.
  • Select Web Page (.htm) from the File Format drop-down menu.
  • Choose a location for saving and click Save. Navigate to the location where the HTML file was saved and open the folder with the same name.

All images in the Word document can be found in the image folder, arranged in the order they appear in the document but with random file names.

Method 6: Use the “Publish to the Web” Trick

Google Docs has a feature that allows you to publish a lightweight webpage based on a copy of your Google Docs file. If you need to download specific images from a document, use Google Docs’ “Publish to the Web” feature.

Create a web-based copy of the file and download the image(s) from the file webpage. Simple as that.

  • Open the Google Docs file, then choose File from the Toolbar and then Publish to the Web.
  • Choose the Publish option.
  • On the pop-up, click OK.
  • Copy the document’s web address and paste it into a new tab.
  • Right-click on the image to be saved and choose Save Image As or Save Image.
  • Rename the image if desired, then choose a preferred storage location on your computer and click Save.

One advantage of this method is that it keeps the original name of the image(s), making it simple to identify saved images. It also saves you the time and effort of renaming images, which is especially useful if the document contains a large number of images.

Method 7: Third-Party Extensions

The popular Google Docs add-on “Image Extractor & Remover” allows users to save images from Google documents. While it is simple to use, the app permissions are excessive. This add-on requires access to your Google Drive files as well as your Google account’s personal information.

You must also grant it access to your Google Drive files in order for it to view, edit, and delete them. That is an excessive amount of data/access for the functionality provided. The trade isn’t worth it.

However, if you’re okay with these permissions or just want to try something new, here’s how to install the add-on.

  • Select Add-ons from the Toolbar, then Get Add-ons.
  • In the search bar, type image extractor and then select Image Extractor & Remover from the suggestions.
  • Choose the app Images Extractor & Remover.

To add the tool to Google Docs, click Install. Check the permissions of the add-on in the “Permissions” tab. Similarly, before installing the add-on, go to the “Reviews” section and read about other users’ experiences.
