What Is Target Pickup And How Does It Work?
Target Pickup is an option by the American retail corporation Target that allows customers to pick up their items in-store. Almost every Target store has Order Pickup, which allows customers to pick up purchases at their chosen store.
With Target Order Pickup, you can purchase items from the website or the Target app and pick them up at a nearby Target store. This will save you a ton of time and effort.
How To Place An Order On Target
There are two ways by which you can order items on Target. You can place your order either through the Target website or use the app.
Ordering On Target Website
Here’s how to order from the website using Target Order Pickup:
- Go to the Target website and sign in to your account. If you don’t have one, you can create it in a few, easy steps.
- Find the item(s) you wish to order, and choose your specifications. The size, color, quantity (if applicable), etc.
- Click the Pick it up or Ship to Store option on the product’s page. The default store for pickup will be the one you chose on your previous shopping. You can also enter a city, state, or ZIP code to search for new stores.
- Choose Edit store to view nearby store pickup alternatives.
- Once you are satisfied, continue to Checkout and place your order. You will receive a pickup notification.
- Go to the store to pick up your purchase after receiving a pickup notification.
- Visit Guest Services or the specified pickup location of your selected store to collect your item(s). You will also receive information on the pickup location via email once your order is ready.
Ordering From the Target Website
Here’s how to order from the Target app using Order Pickup:
- Sign in to your Target account. Ensure you have the app’s latest version on your mobile device.
- Find the item(s) you wish to order, and choose your specifications. The size, color, quantity (if applicable), etc.
- Click the Pick it up or Ship to Store option available on the product’s page. As with shopping on the website, the default store for pickup will also be the one you chose on your previous shopping. You can also enter a city, state, or ZIP code to search for new stores.
- Choose Edit store to view alternative nearby store pickup.
- Continue to Checkout and place your order. You will receive a pickup notification.
- Go to the store to pick up your purchase after receiving a pickup notification.
- Visit Guest Services or the specified pickup location of your selected store to collect your item(s). You will also receive information on the pickup location via email once your order is ready.
How Long Does Target Pickup Take?
Order Pickup lets you order items on Target either via the Target app or the website and pick them up for free at your local Target store. Eligible items have Order Pickup listed on the item’s page, and are usually ready within 2 hours of placing your order.
Note: It can take up to six hours to prepare your items, depending on the store you chose.
Items marked Ship to Store can be picked up within 4-7 days instead.
What Do I Need To Bring To Pickup My Order?
Present your Mobile Wallet barcode located on the Wallet tab of the Target app to a team member at Guest Services. You can also present one of the following forms of ID:
- Government-issued photo ID
- State-issued driver’s license
- State-issued ID card
- Passport
- Military ID
- Certificate of Citizenship
- Certificate of Naturalization
- Permanent Resident
- Green Card
- Native American Travel Photo ID
Note: Be sure the ID is valid and has not yet expired.
Your online payment will be processed when your order is in Ready for Pickup status. You won’t need to show your method of payment at the store.
How To Check The Availability Of Local Target Stores
On the Target Website
You can use the Check other stores function on the Target website to check an item’s availability at a particular Target store.
To check if your selected item is available in the store you chose, go to the product details page for the item on the site. The inventory of the store that you have selected as My store will immediately appear at the top of the page.
And if you want to check the inventory of a different store, simply click Edit on the product details page for the item. Enter a ZIP code or city and state and select Find stores to browse stores. This will give you a list of stores that stock the item.
On the Target App
To check for an item’s availability on the Target app, simply search for it on the Target app and visit the product details page to see if the item is available at your preferred store.
The inventory of the store you’ve selected as My Store will automatically appear at the top of the page.
Here’s how to locate inventory at a different store.
- Go to the Account tab.
- Switch from My Store to the store you want to look up.
- Go to the product details page and check the item’s availability at the top of your screen.
Note: Supplies are limited, and availability can be affected by sudden adjustments. Therefore, Target cannot guarantee data accuracy of production.
To verify an item’s availability, we recommend that you call the store.
What Is Target Drive Up?
Target Drive Up also allows you to order items from the Target app, but that is where its similarities with pickup ends. For Drive Up, a staff brings your ordered items out to you when you arrive at the designated drive up parking spaces available at local Target stores.
Drive Up is available on the Target app for iOS and Android. Also, please make sure you have updated to the latest version of the app.
To use Target Drive Up, add eligible items to your cart, select Drive Up as your delivery method if it is available at your selected store, and place your order. The store will charge your payment method when your items are picked and placed on hold for you.
To pick up your Drive Up order:
- Wait for a “Your order is ready” email and in-app notification.
- Tip: Enable push notifications to get notifications even when your device is locked.
- When you are ready to head to the store, open the Target app and select Tell us you’re coming. If it doesn’t automatically populate, you can find it on the Account tab under Purchases.
- On the next screen, select I’m on my way when leaving for the store.
- Park in the designated Drive Up parking spot. The designated parking spots are located near a store entrance.
- Select I’m here after you’ve parked, then enter the parking stall number. This will alert the team member.
- A Target staff will bring your order out to your vehicle and ask for the four-digit code in your Target app to confirm the order.
What Items Are Eligible For Target Order Pickup and Drive Up?
To determine if an item is eligible for either Order Pickup or Drive Up, find the Pick it up option on the item’s product details page. You can also add the item to your cart and change delivery options.
Select stores offer fresh grocery pickup for select items. These include essentials like cheese, milk, fresh produce, and a variety of frozen food items. Orders with fresh items will be held until the end of the next business day.
Drive Up is only available in the Target app.
How Long Will A Store Hold My Order Pickup Or Drive Up?
Most stores will hold an Order Pickup and Drive Up order for three days.
- If your order isn’t picked up within three days, the store will cancel the order and issue a refund to your original form of payment.
- If your order contains fresh or frozen grocery items, the store will hold your order until the close of the next business day. After this, they will cancel it and issue a refund to you.
- If you have added Starbucks Café items to your Drive Up order, the store can only keep these items fresh for 30 minutes after you have placed your order. After that, the item will be discarded.
Orders that don’t contain fresh or frozen groceries can have their pickup window extended by an additional three days. You can do this on your Order details page, but before the end of your initial pickup window.
Orders with fresh or frozen groceries can’t be extended.
Can I Change My Order Pickup Or Driveup Pickup After Placing My Order?
Once you have received a notification that your order is ready for pickup up, you can change your pickup method from Order Pickup to Drive Up or vice versa using the Target app. Use the prompts in the app to select your desired pickup method.
However, if you are unable to pick up your order at the store originally selected or you encounter some error, you can simply cancel your order or let the pickup window expire.

What Happens If I Forget My Drive Up Return Items?
When you create a return for multiple items, Target groups those items together throughout the experience.
However, if you called ahead to say you are bringing a group of return items but forget some or all the items from those groups, Target will return what is available and cancel any return you didn’t bring. But you can always try to restart a return online for the canceled return items if you happen to find them later and they’re still eligible based on Target’s return policy.
