Shelton J. Haynes, the President and CEO of the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC), has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to cultivating community engagement and empowerment on Roosevelt Island. Through various initiatives and projects, Haynes and his team have prioritized fostering a strong sense of community and empowering residents to actively participate in shaping the island’s future.
One of the cornerstones of Haynes’ approach is promoting transparency and trust within the community. When he assumed the role of interim president and CEO of RIOC in June 2020, Haynes pledged a renewed emphasis on transparency to build a foundation of trust among residents and the organization. In a letter to his employees, he outlined the importance of actualizing goals and holding the team accountable to achieve tangible results.
“We have to do it and hold ourselves accountable to the realistic deadlines we have set,” Haynes wrote, highlighting his commitment to action over mere promises. This emphasis on transparency and accountability has resonated with the community, fostering an atmosphere of openness and collaboration.
Shelton Haynes Wants A Inclusive Community
Haynes recognizes the value of public art in building a vibrant and inclusive community. Under his leadership, the island’s natural beauty has been complemented by the development of public art installations. The FDR Hope Memorial and The Girl Puzzle sculptures, honoring Nellie Bly, stand as symbols of inclusion and diversity, embodying the island’s legacy of progressiveness.
At the ribbon-cutting ceremony for The Girl Puzzle, Haynes emphasized the importance of such art installations in representing women and equality. He noted that these sculptures and other historic landmarks like the Blackwell House and the iconic Tramway make Roosevelt Island an exceptional destination where history, education, and current events converge.
Haynes has also championed projects that benefit the island’s residents, particularly its youth. The Roosevelt Island Youth Center (RIYC) underwent a $2.1 million renovation to become a hub of youth development, engagement, and academic stewardship. This space provides a safe environment for youth to participate in enrichment, recreational, and educational programming, fostering personal growth, social discovery, and team building.
RIOC Supports Nonprofits
Furthermore, Haynes takes pride in supporting local nonprofits through the Roosevelt Island Public Purpose Fund. By administering grants through The New York Community Trust, RIOC has empowered 13 nonprofits to enhance the quality of life for Roosevelt Island residents. Projects supported by these grants include educational opportunities for older adults, services for people with disabilities, and orchestral concerts, all of which contribute to a thriving and inclusive community.
As a driving force behind numerous community-focused initiatives, Haynes aims to make Roosevelt Island a model of community policing. Despite being one of the safest neighborhoods in New York City, he believes that further strengthening the Public Safety Department can set an example for other communities. Haynes seeks to create a safe, welcoming environment that fosters trust and collaboration between residents and law enforcement.
Haynes’ vision for the future of Roosevelt Island also encompasses economic development and affordable housing. With its modern design and Panorama Room rooftop bar, the Graduate Roosevelt Island became the island’s first hotel. Additionally, the groundbreaking of Riverwalk Building #9, an affordable housing complex, signifies progress in meeting the community’s housing needs.
The Best Is Yet To Come
Roosevelt Island’s best days are yet to come, according to Haynes. With a focus on community engagement, empowerment, and sustainable development, he envisions a future where the island thrives as a diverse, inclusive, and resilient community.
As the President and CEO of RIOC, Shelton Haynes’ leadership has been instrumental in creating a strong sense of community and empowerment on Roosevelt Island. By fostering transparency, supporting public art, investing in youth development, and promoting economic growth, Haynes and his team are paving the way for a bright and promising future for the island and its residents. Through his visionary approach and dedication to community engagement, Haynes continues to make a lasting impact on Roosevelt Island’s social fabric and its path toward progress and prosperity.
