Important Authentication Breach in Arcserve Backup System

During a normal red team simulation of an Arcserve backup system, an MDSec ActiveBreach red team found a key way to get past authentication.

In a study post, MDSec ActiveBreach experts explained how the weakness could be exploited and shared tools and a proof-of-concept (PoC) exploit that other pen testers could use. According to the study’s findings, threat actors may use backup systems to access admin accounts and take over vulnerable backups.

The authentication bypass bug (CVE-2023-26258) was discovered in the Arcserve Unified Data Protection (UDP) tool for protecting company data. According to Arcserve’s website, more than 235,000 users worldwide use its backup solutions.

According to Arcserve, the problem affects all backup systems running Arcserve UDP 7.0 through 9.0. If an attacker gets into a local network, they can use this flaw to take over the UDP admin interface and then get real admin sessions.

Two weeks after opening a support request, MDsec ActiveBreach researchers revealed a CVE with Arcserve on February 21. Arcserve informed MDsec on March 28 that they required extra investigative time. On June 21, Arcserve produced a hotfix, and on June 27, it delivered a patch.

Earlier this week, Arcserve “strongly recommended” that all users upgrade to UDP 9.1 Windows, which security teams may accomplish via a built-in auto-update or its 9.1 RTM release for fresh deployments and previous versions.

Security teams must act on these CVEs since Rapid7 researchers discovered that more than half of the vulnerabilities they examined were exploited within seven days of public disclosure in 2021 and 58% within two weeks.
