Facebook is putting a stronger focus on short video forms with the launch of Facebook Reels. In addition, the network is introducing new options for creators to use and make money from Facebook reels.

Facebook stated that overall, 50% of the time spent on both Facebook and Instagram is for video content, and by far, the most popular content format is Reels. That’s why Meta is now making a significant investment in Facebook Reels. Eligible content creators can now embed ads in their Reels or take on monetized challenges to earn money.

Viewers also have the new option to tip their favorite artists on the app.

What are Facebook Reels?

Reels are short-form videos that users can enhance with special effects and music. Reels are similar to TikTok posts in both form (short-form videos) and content (trendy, amusing, and driven by sound bites). 

According to Meta, the Reel is the “fastest-growing content format” on Facebook. Generally, users spend half their time on Facebook and Instagram watching videos. Facebook Reels recently expanded to more than 150 countries.

In short, Facebook Reels are short-form video content meant to compete with the short videos on TikTok. Just like on TikTok, Facebook Reels allow businesses and users to enhance their video footage with special effects, music, and other post-production elements. It is incredibly similar to the Instagram Reels we explained above.

Every business should already have a Facebook business page. Having a Facebook account for your business can yield numerous benefits in terms of sales, online presence, and brand awareness. But Reels are one way for businesses to take their Facebook presence to the next level.

The goal of Facebook Reels is to provide engaging, short video content that’s easy to consume. Naturally, many businesses have now started to use Facebook Reels for marketing purposes, and influencers also create a lot of Facebook Reels content.

Facebook Reels can be between three seconds and sixty seconds long. Content creators have leveraged this new type of video content to pursue advertising opportunities and to make money.

Facebook Reels monetization requirements

To be eligible to monetize your Facebook Reels, you must meet the following requirements:

  • To earn money from your Facebook Reels, you must be at least 18 years old and have a good-standing account.
  • Have more than 10,000 followers
  • Your Reels must be original and created by you.
  • Have at least five videos
  • Your Reels must be at least 30 seconds long and no longer than 10 minutes.
  • Have 600,000 minutes of viewership over the last 60 days

Once you meet these requirements, you can apply to monetize your Reels through Creator Studio.

There are a few things you can do to increase your chances of being approved for monetization:

  • Create high-quality Reels that are engaging and interesting to your audience.
  • Use relevant hashtags and tags to help people find your Reels.
  • Interact with your audience and encourage them to comment, like, and share your Reels.
  • Promote your Reels on other social media platforms and encourage people to watch them on Facebook.

The amount of money you earn from your Reels will vary depending on a number of factors, including the quality of your content, the engagement of your audience, and the overall popularity of Reels on Facebook.

Facebook reserves the right to change or terminate the Reels monetization program at any time.

How to make money with Facebook Reels

Ads

Content creators with more than 10,000 followers, at least five videos, and 600,000 minutes of viewership in the past 60 days are eligible to embed ads in their Reels. These new advertising options are currently available in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and 50 other countries. 

According to TechCrunch, the revenue for overlay ads will be split: 55% to content creators and 45% to Facebook. 

Prior to the announcement, content creators on the site could only include ads in their Facebook videos. The new Facebook Reels overlay ads allow users to place marketing bumpers directly on top of their Reels, like stickers. Banner ads, a semi-transparent overlay at the bottom of a Reel, and sticker ads will be available; the latter can be placed anywhere on the Reel. 

Reels bonus program

Since launching Reels, Meta tested numerous ways for creators to monetize their projects, including the Reels Play bonus program. This pays a “bonus” to anyone whose Reels get at least 1,000 views over a 30-day period. 

Those who fulfill Facebook’s eligibility requirements will be able to make money from Facebook reels up to $35,000 per month, and the program is currently available to certain creators in the United States. This program offers a bonus whose reels receive at least 1,000 views in a 30-day period.

Stars

Meta also announced that it will soon allow viewers to send stars to a content creator while watching their Reels. For every star received, the creator gets one cent from Meta.

Challenges

Meta recently announced that it will provide bonuses to creators who publish original Reels on Facebook. Their challenges incentive program allows creators to earn up to $4,000 per month by completing sequential, cumulative challenges. When a creator completes one challenge, the next one opens up—until the end of 30 days, when the progress is reset.

At its current stage, creators must be invited into the Reels bonus program to earn money through challenges.

How to use overlay ads in Facebook Reels

Overlay ads can be used to help monetize your Facebook Reels. Overlay ads are placed directly on top of a Facebook Reel in a banner or sticker format. They appear transparently over the reels content, meaning that people can view the ad without interruption.

If an overlay ad is included in your reel, you’ll earn a portion of the advertising revenue.

Types of overlay ads

There are two types of overlay ads on Facebook Reels: banner ads and sticker ads.

Banner ads appear as a semi-transparent overlay at the bottom of a Facebook Reel, whereas sticker ads are static image ads that can be placed by a creator anywhere within their reel.

How do I insert overlay ads in my reels?

If you are part of the existing in-stream ads program for Facebook videos, you are automatically opted into banner ads in reels by default. But note that not all of your reels will contain banner ads. Whether or not ads are included depends on a variety of factors; these range from advertiser targeting-setting to the value of the ad for the viewer.

And just like with in-stream ads, you can opt out of banner ads running in your reels content in Creator Studio.

For sticker ads, be sure to follow these steps:

  1. After adding your creative for a reel, tap Stickers on the right-hand menu panel.
  2. Below the Stickers tab, tap Ad.
  3. Tap Add Sticker Ad.
  4. Adjust the positioning of the sticker ad frame to your reel.

Facebook will choose an ad to display in this frame that is suited to the viewer. Keep in mind that just because you insert a sticker ad frame, an ad won’t necessarily be included.

Who is eligible?

If you’re currently eligible to monetize your videos with in-stream ads for on-demand on Facebook, then you’ll also be eligible to monetize your reels with overlay ads. No need to opt in, the reels you share publicly on Facebook are automatically eligible to monetize with overlay ads.

Other ways to make money with Facebook Reels

Facebook Reels’ bonus program isn’t the only way to monetize this type of content. Indeed, many other strategies exist to help creators to earn money for sponsored content.

For example, on the Facebook and Instagram apps, you can create sponsored content by partnering with different brands and advertising products and services to your social media followers. This is the go-to earning strategy for influencers and online marketers of all kinds.

However, keep in mind that this monetization strategy only becomes truly successful if you work hard at it and build a following over time. For now, it might be a good idea to use the Facebook Reels bonus program to build up that audience by creating savvy, entertaining short-form video content.

Empower your imagination

Anyone can render a reel on Facebook, position themselves as creators, and earn money from Facebook reels. However, to boost your creativity for higher engagement figures, make sure that you are aware of all of Facebook Reel’s editing tools.

  • Audio: You can look for a song in the Facebook music collection for your reel. Or, instead of published audio, you can use your own original audio. You may either add audio from the cam before you shoot a clip or after you’ve already recorded or uploaded one. You may also use original audio from other public reels by choosing Use Audio from another person’s reel.
  • Timer and Countdown: You can use the timer function to record a clip without even pressing the shutter button.
  • AR Effects: You can also make use of many effects provided by Facebook itself or other third-party developers for creating multiple clips with various effects.
  • Speed: While recording, you may speed up or slow down the video to highlight the up moments with slow-motion mode.
