The race to integrate AI into everything is on, and social media too, as it turns out, is not exempt. Snapchat is the first to join the race and has rolled out its own AI chatbot, dubbed “My AI,” which is capable of various things.
Snapchat is an extremely popular social media platform used by young people to engage with each other through sharing stories, direct messages, and multimedia photo and video content. Its AI chatbot is designed to help users with various tasks through their messaging section in the Snapchat app.
What is Snapchat?
Snapchat is a messaging app that allows users to share content, such as photos, texts and videos, i.e., ‘Snaps’. Snaps only appear for a matter of seconds before disappearing from users’ screens.
You can choose to send a ‘Snap’ directly to one other person, or you can post it on your ‘Story’ so that all your contacts can view it. Your contacts can view this for 24 hours before it disappears and can be found in your archives if you choose this setting.
What is My AI?
My AI is a computer program designed to have conversations and dialogue with users like a person. As you input information, either by typing or speaking, it responds to you.
The new Snapchat chatbot is designed to bring the power of artificial intelligence to social media. This chatbot works like a chat companion. Snapchat users can use the new AI chatbot to talk about a variety of different things. However, it also contains additional features that lend it more power. If you ask it a question, it searches available databases, gathers information, and formulates a response.
Snapchat’s AI is based on OpenAI’s GPT technology and likely uses the latest GPT 3.5 language model. Since it is based on the same technology, it works in similar ways to other ChatGPT-like apps. However, Snapchat mentions that the more the user interacts with the AI, the better it gets to know them.
As you engage with the tool, it grows in knowledge and becomes more specific to your interests and interactions. So yeah, the chatbot essentially evolves as you converse with it.
What can My AI Do?
Users can use the new Snapchat My AI bot as a conversation companion to pass their time. However, the new AI chatbot can do a variety of other things.
My AI is your personal sidekick. Talking to the bot is no different from chatting with any other friend you have on Speechify. You can ask the bot for advice, get gift ideas, plan meals, suggest activity ideas, and more. It can plan trips, write poems and haiku, etc. Since Snapchat’s AI is like a companion, you can give it a custom name and even customize its chat wallpaper.
My AI is also pretty good at jokes and can offer game recommendations on the platform; however, it still can’t participate in them. Some text-based games you can play with the bot inside the chat include trivia, 21 questions, and truth and dare.
However, note that this is not a fully portable version of ChatGPT. Snapchat’s My AI chatbot cannot write essays, blog posts, or do your homework for you. Snapchat has made it clear that My AI is not perfect and very prone to errors. As the company puts it, the chatbot is “prone to hallucination and can be tricked into saying just about anything.”
This means you cannot rely on this bot as a primary means for information and should make sure to verify any information it gives.
How to use My AI on iOS and Android
The new Snapchat AI chatbot was initially available as an experimental feature to Snapchat Plus subscribers in the U.S. However, the company has now rolled out My AI bot access to everyone for free. You don’t even need a Snapchat+ subscription to talk to the AI bot, which has already been deemed really annoying and creepy.
You will see “My AI” pinned under the app’s “Chat” tab by default, right above your conversations with friends. To access My AI, simply swipe right from the “Camera” tab to access the “Chat” tab and try it out. The bot is currently in the experimental stages, and some of the features are only limited to Snapchat Plus subscribers.

How to Remove ‘My AI’ From Your Chat Feed
If you’re among a lot of users who are not interested in using Snapchat My AI, you can go ahead and disable the chatbot. You can unpin its chat and even remove it entirely. Here is how to do it:
- First, tap on your profile icon (or Bitmoji) in the top left corner. Then, tap on the “Settings” cog in the top right.
- Scroll down to the “Privacy Controls” settings and tap on “Clear Data.” Then, tap on “Clear Conversations” on the next page.
- On the Clear Conversations page, tap on the “X” icon next to “My AI” to remove the chatbot from your chat feed.
While initially limited, Snapchat Plus users across the world received access to this chatbot first. It is now widely available to all Snapchat users for free.
What data does My AI collect?
My AI can access your location if you allow Snapchat to access your location. Snap says My AI doesn’t collect any new location data from you and only pulls from the data you provided to Snapchat.
Some users enable a Snapchat feature called Ghost Mode that allows you to hide your location from your friends and remove you from the Snap Map. However, Ghost Mode does not ensure that My AI cannot access your location. Snap says that even with Ghost Mode on, My AI may access your location if you’ve granted location tracking permission to Snapchat.
Snap also stores your conversations with My AI until you manually delete them, but it can take up to 30 days for your conversation data with My AI to be removed from Snapchat servers. The platform uses your conversations with My AI to train the AI model and to better target you with personalized ads.
Snapchat’s privacy policy states that all Snaps are deleted from Snapchat servers after all recipients view them. But Snap makes a clear distinction that the chats sent to My AI do not follow this guideline and are only deleted if you request Snapchat to delete them.
It should be assumed that Snap retains any audio or photos you send to My AI and can only be deleted if you do it yourself.
How long are My AI interactions stored?
My AI interactions don’t expire. They will be stored in your Snapchat inbox until you delete them. However, to get the most out of the tool’s personalization benefits, you may want to keep the past messages. Doing so will help My AI learn more about your preferences.
How to unpin My AI from the chat feed
If you don’t need My AI or want to limit its usage, you can unpin it from your Chat feed. To do so, follow the steps below:
- Open your Snapchat app.
- Go to the Snapchat+ management system.
- Switch off the toggle next to My AI.
Note that following these steps won’t remove the tool from your Chat screen. To remove My AI from the Chat section, follow these steps:
- Open your Chat screen by swiping right from the Camera screen.
- Press and hold the My AI tool.
- Hit Chat Settings.
- Select Clear from Chat Feed.
Alternatively, you can follow the steps below:
- Click on your Profile icon from your Snapchat feed.
- Go to Settings.
- Scroll to the Privacy Controls section.
- Hit Clear Data.
- Press Clear Conversations.
- Select X next to the AI tool to remove it from your Chat feed.
Deleting My AI Data
Snapchat+ lets you hide messages you send to My AI within 24 hours. Additionally, you can delete the chat history by following the steps below:
- Click on your Profile icon from your Snapchat feed
- Tap the Gear icon and open Settings.
- Scroll to Privacy Controls.
- Select Clear Data.
- Press Clear My AI Chat Queries.
- Confirm your action.
You can also delete your My AI chat with the following alternate steps:
- Press the Profile icon in the Snapchat app.
- Tap the Gear icon and open Settings.
- Scroll to Account Actions.
- Hit Clear My AI Chat Queries.
- Confirm.
Sending Feedback
My AI is still in the early stages of development. It may offer partial or biased answers and sometimes, you shouldn’t rely on its advice. The company has stated that the tool is prone to hallucination and that users can trick it into saying anything.
Sending feedback is a good way to let the developers know of inconsistencies or glitches. It also helps make the experience more customized for your needs.
You can send feedback to the developer team by following the simple steps below:
- Open the chat with the bot.
- Long-press on any response from the bot.
- Press Submit Feedback.
- Share what you’d like to improve about that answer or the overall experience.
Difference Between My AI and ChatGPT
My AI was brought to Snapchat by Open AI and their famous ChatGPT tool. The ChatGPT integration into Snapchat makes it possible to explore one of the hottest trending AI tools on the market with the price of a Snapchat subscription.
You may have had the opportunity to test out the ChatGPT tool. If so, you should know that My AI doesn’t have the same functionalities as ChatGPT.
The Snapchat tool uses the same technology but is more limited in providing answers. It adheres to Snapchat’s safety and trust guidelines and can’t provide answers involving swearing, sexually explicit content, or politics. My AI also doesn’t write academic essays.
Another major difference is that My AI treats the tool like a persona. The tool has its own profile page like any other user on the app. The idea behind Snapchat’s tool is to be a new friend in your Snapchat list with whom you can have fun. It’s not meant to be your search engine.
Speed is an important benefit of My AI. While ChatGPT takes seconds to generate a response, My AI does it in the blink of an eye.
