Keeping online sites and services secure takes time and effort, especially social media accounts. So, it is time to change if you are still logging into Instagram with a weak password, a password duplicated on other sites, or a password compromised in a hack or data breach.
Fortunately, you can change your Instagram password on your computer or mobile device in just a few steps.
What You Should Know
- Tap Get help signing in on Android. Enter your username, phone number, or email address, and then click Next to receive a password reset link.
- Tap Forgot Password? on iOS and enter your username, phone number, or email address. Enter the text message code or click the email password reset link.
- Navigate to the Instagram website on your computer. To obtain a password reset link, click Forgot Password? and enter your username, phone number, or email address.
How to Change Your Instagram Password on Your Phone
The steps for changing your password in the mobile app are nearly identical for iOS and Android.
- Launch the Instagram application.
- To access your profile page, tap the account icon in the lower-right corner.
- If you have multiple Instagram accounts and want to change the password for one of them, tap and hold the account icon at the bottom of the screen and select the desired account from the pop-up window.
- Tap the three horizontal lines in the upper-right corner of the screen, then Settings.
- Select Security.
- Select Password from the Security page.
- Type in your current password, followed by the new password you want to use. When finished, tap Save (on iOS) or the checkmark (on Android).
How to Change Your Instagram Password on the Desktop Site
- Navigate to the Instagram website.
- In the bottom-left corner, click the hamburger menu (the three-dot icon), and then click Settings.
- Select Change Password from the left-hand menu.
- Enter your current password on the right side, followed by the new password you want to use. When finished, click Change Password.
How to Reset Instagram Password Using an Android Device
Step 1: Launch Instagram on your phone or tablet
On your phone or tablet, launch the Instagram app. In your app drawer, it’s the purple-red-orange gradient icon with a white, square camera. This will take you to the sign-in page.
Instagram for Android is available on the Google Play Store.
If you’re already logged in and want to change your password, tap the profile icon at the bottom, then the menu at the top-right, and then Settings Privacy and Security Password.
However, if you don’t remember your current password, tap Reset Password with Facebook (if available) or Forgot Password? to proceed with this method.
Step 2: Select Get Assistance Signing In
Tap Get assistance with signing in. It’s just below the sign-in form.
You may need to first tap Log in.
Step 3: Enter your E-mail Address, Phone Number, or Username
Enter your e-mail address, phone number, or username. When entering an email address or phone number, use the one associated with your account.
To complete the password reset process, you must have access to this email address or phone number.
If your Instagram account is linked to Facebook, scroll down and tap Log In with Facebook, then sign in with your Facebook account. If you don’t remember your Facebook login information, you must change your Facebook password.
Next, press the blue button. One of the following events will occur:
- If you entered an email address, you will receive a confirmation link at that address.
- If you enter a phone number, an SMS text message with a confirmation link or code will be sent to that number.
- If you entered a username, you’ll be prompted to choose a method for receiving your confirmation code. The methods differ depending on how you registered for your account. Tap
Send an SMS if you want to receive it by phone, or send an email if you want to receive it by email.
Step 5: To Confirm, Tap OK
To confirm, tap OK. It is located at the bottom of the pop-up window.
Step 6: Open the Email or Text Message From Instagram
Open the Instagram email or text message. The message includes a link that starts with https://ig.me.
Check your Spam, Social, or Updates folders if you’ve been waiting for the Instagram email for more than a few minutes.
Step 7: Click the Reset Password Link
Click the link to reset your password. This takes you to a page where you can change your account’s password.
If your text message contains a code rather than a link, enter it into the Instagram blank and tap Next to verify it.
Step 8: Double-enter your New Password
Double-enter your new password. You’ll type it into the two text fields on this page.
Step 9: Select Reset Password
Select Reset Password. It is located at the bottom of the page. You can now access Instagram after your password has been reset.
How to Reset Instagram Password Using an iPhone or iPad
Step 1: On Your Phone or Tablet, Launch the Instagram App
On your home screen, it’s the purple-red-orange gradient icon with a white square camera. This takes you to the Instagram sign-in screen.
Instagram is available in the App Store for iOS.
If you’re already logged in but want to change your password, tap the profile icon at the bottom, the top-right menu, and Settings. To create a new password, go to Security Password.
If you don’t remember your current password, sign out and try again.
Step 2: Select Forgot Password
It’s the blue link just below the login form.
To access the sign-in screen, you may need to tap a blue Log-in button.
If your Instagram account is linked to your Facebook account, sign in by tapping the Facebook link. You’ll need to reset your password on Facebook if you don’t remember it.
Step 3: Provide Your Username, Phone Number, or Email Address
Enter your e-mail address, phone number, or username. When entering an email address or phone number, use the one associated with your account.
To complete the password reset process, you must have access to this email address or phone number.
One of the following events will occur:
- If you enter an email address, you will receive a confirmation link at that address.
- If you enter a phone number, an SMS text message with a confirmation link or code will be sent to that number.
- If you enter a username, an email with a confirmation link will be sent to the account’s email address. You’ll see your email’s first and last letter or digit, as well as the email provider.
Step 5: Tap Reset Your Password in the Email (email only)
Tap the blue button to open the Create a Password screen if you received an email from Instagram.
If you don’t see the email, check your Spam folder.
Skip to the next step if you’re using a phone number.
Step 6: Enter the Text Message Confirmation Code and Tap Next (Phone Only)
Enter the text message confirmation code and press Next (phone only). You should see the Create a Password screen after entering the code from your text message.
If you received a link via email, skip this step.
Step 7: Double-enter your new password
Type in your new password twice. You must enter it in the two text fields on this page.
Make sure to use a strong password.
Step 8: Select Reset Password
Select Reset Password. It is located at the bottom of the page. You can now log into Instagram with your new login information, as your password has been reset.
How to Reset Instagram Password Using a Web Browser
Step 1: Visit Instagram at https://www.instagram.com…
In a web browser, navigate to https://www.instagram.com. This takes you to the Instagram login page. You can use Google Chrome, Safari, Mozilla Firefox, or another browser.
You’re already logged in if you see your Instagram feed instead of a login page. Click the gear icon at the top of your profile after clicking your photo in the top-right corner. To change your password, follow these steps:
If you know your current password and want to change it, enter it first, followed by a new one you must type and confirm. To save your changes, click the Change Password button.
If you don’t remember your password, click Forget Password? at the bottom of the form and use this method instead.
Step 2: Click the Forgot password? Link
It’s in the upper-right corner of the page, just below the login options.
If you used your Facebook login to create your Instagram account, click Log in with Facebook instead, and then sign in with your Facebook account. If you don’t remember your Facebook password, you can reset it via the Facebook website.
Step 3: Provide the Email Address, Phone Number, or Username for Your Account
With any of these pieces of information, you can have the confirmation link sent to your email address or phone number.
Step 4: Select the Login Link to Send option
Select the Send Login Link option. It’s the blue button to the right of the form. This sends a password reset code to the registered email address or phone number.
If the email address or phone number you entered cannot be found, it is possible that you registered your account using incorrect information.
Step 5: View the Instagram Email or Text Message
The message includes a link that starts with https://ig.me.
Check your Spam, Social, or Updates folders if you’ve been waiting for the Instagram email for over a few minutes.
Click the Reset your password button in blue. This takes you to a page where you can change your account’s password.
Step 7: Enter Your New Password Twice More
Please enter your new password twice. You’ll type it into the two text fields on this page.
Make a password that you will remember.
Step 8: Select or click Reset Password
Reset Password can be accessed by clicking or tapping the button. It is located at the bottom of the page. You can access your Instagram account using your new password if your passwords match.
