What are the advantages of using ShareGate?

Here is a rundown of the advantages of using ShareGate, along with some explanation:

#1: You can concurrently run several migration sessions.

ShareGate enables the concurrent operation of several migrations. On the other hand, it’s crucial to realize that factors such as hardware content complexity, bandwidth, network, and others affect the speed and quantity of the numerous migrations you can perform.

#2. It provides two migration options.

Using Normal mode and Insane mode, you can conduct migrations with two different transfer speeds. Azure is used in insane mode to transfer stuff more quickly than in normal mode.

#3. It provides a lot of enlightening reports.

You can plan your migration using reports. By recognizing flaws and problems, you can make sure to fix them before beginning the migration. Note that you can keep track of them using these reports to reduce the possibility of errors.

#4. Allows for extended use.

It gives you the ability to work in SharePoint and perform maintenance. Because it may be reused for changes to SharePoint in the future, upgrading to newer versions is also made simple.

#5. Sharegate provides migration log status.

ShareGate maintains an audit trail to track the efficiency of the migration. It keeps track of any warnings and faults that occur during platform migration. Note that these alerts and faults can be found in the log files by checking the main menu.

#6. Maintain dependencies on libraries and lists.

SharePoint makes sure that your preferences are taken into account and that nothing is damaged when you migrate while copying dependencies. Additionally, you have the choice to modify your dependencies during migration, allowing you greater freedom over where they should be replicated.

#7. Migrate material

Contents from the source are also included when migrating. Therefore, with a simple drag-and-drop, lists, libraries, and their contents can all be moved.

#8. It maintains settings.

Even after migration, migrated lists, libraries, workflows, and permissions keep their configurations.

#9. It functions independently

Performing the migration does not require access to the server. Therefore, ShareGate can be installed on a regular PC with an internet connection and access to the migration source and destination.

Disadvantages of using ShareGate

Despite being remarkable on its own, ShareGate includes some features that could cause you problems.

The following are some drawbacks to using ShareGate:

  1. ShareGate only keeps track of the most recent 10 migrating sessions, and you cannot save session settings as templates to be used in subsequent migrations. If the migration setting you require is not found within the 10 most recent sessions, you will have to change it, which is a major drawback for huge migrations.
  2. Larger-than-2-GB files cannot be transferred. The file size limit for Office 365 and SharePoint 2016 has been extended to 10GB, but ShareGate cannot move these files. However, you must manually upload these files to SharePoint to relocate them.
  3. The migration report cannot be used to restart any items indicated as having errors. Rerunning the migration for those items is necessary.
  4. Additionally, ShareGate is unable to identify any missing or out-of-date features in the SharePoint version you are migrating to.
  5. ShareGate cannot migrate an app that uses app webs on your source platform to your target platform. After the migration, you must upload the app to the destination to confirm that it was successful.
  6. Finally, ShareGate is not the ideal choice if you wish to make significant modifications to your newly converted site during the migration.
