While most people are familiar with Amazon Prime Video as the on-demand streaming service that comes with Amazon Prime membership, anyone can sign up for Prime Video on its own. But the question is, regardless of whether or not you sign up for Prime Video separately, Can You Download Movies on Amazon Prime?
The short answer is yes. Amazon Prime supports offline viewing of movies and TV shows downloaded to your device (including Amazon’s own Fire tablets and phone, as well as those running Android and iOS).
However, desktop computers, notebooks, and Amazon’s own Fire TV boxes are not included. You might ask why? So let’s go over this in detail, covering all you should know about Amazon Prime Video and download restrictions.
Can I Download Amazon Prime Movies to My Computer?
The Amazon Prime Video App allows for offline viewing of Amazon Prime videos. However, you can only view those videos within the app and cannot transfer or download them to external storage. Furthermore, Amazon does not have a desktop Prime Video app. As a result, the question of whether you can rip Amazon Prime video arises, and the answer is, thankfully, yes. Even though there is no official method, there are some third-party tools you can use to download movies and catch up on missed episodes of your favourite TV show, even when you are not connected to the internet.
How to Download Amazon Prime Video Movies and Shows
#1. Download the Amazon Prime App
- Step 1: To begin, you’ll need an Amazon account and an Amazon Prime subscription. You’ll also need the Amazon Prime Video app, which requires a compatible Fire, Android, or iOS device. The app is also available for Mac and Windows desktop computers. Surprisingly, their appearance and functionality are all consistent.
Launch the app after installation and sign in to your Amazon Prime account.
- Step 2: Next, choose a movie or TV show to download and open the video details. It should be noted that not all Amazon Prime movies or TV shows are available for download, and you can only download content if you are in certain countries (for example, the United States). You can download individual episodes or the entire season if it’s a series.
Also, before downloading, make sure to choose the download quality (Good, Better, Best) you want for your downloads — they will consume different amounts of data (more on that below).
Once you’ve decided on a movie or show, tap the Download button — you can also download individual episodes of shows.
- Step 3: Select the Downloads button at the bottom to browse the films and shows you’ve previously downloaded. Your downloaded titles will be listed here. Tap the one you want to hear, and it will begin to play. Tap the title to open the list of episodes you’ve downloaded if it’s a series.
#2. Casting Your Content
The Prime Video app is available for compatible mobile devices, tablets, and Windows 10 and Mac computers. If you want to watch your downloaded movies and TV shows on a larger screen, you can do so by “casting” the content to your television. This is how.
- Step 1: Start watching the video you want to watch, then look for the casting button in the top-right corner. The iOS and Android icons differ slightly, with each providing access to their respective compatible devices. The image below is an example from the Mac desktop app.
- Step 2: The app will then look for devices to which you can cast the video, such as a Fire TV stick, AirPlay or Apple TV devices, Smart TVs, Chromecasts, and other options.
How Much Space Do I Require?
The amount of storage required for a file is determined by its quality. We downloaded the film One Night in Miami in Best quality, which took up 1GB of storage on an iPhone, and it took up 535MB in Better quality (the second-lowest). Season 1 of Upload, with ten episodes total, took up 2.6GB when downloaded in Best quality.
According to Amazon, only a limited number of titles are available for download. When we looked through the Prime Video selections, every title available to Prime members appeared downloadable. Almost certainly, all Amazon Originals will be available for download. You can only download videos while in the United States and its territories if you have an Amazon account in the United States. More on this later.
Amazon Prime Video Download Restrictions
- While downloading content and media from Amazon Prime Video is highly convenient, there are some constraints. First, once you download a movie or show, you will have 30 days to watch it before it “expires,” i.e., is deleted. And once you start watching a movie or episode, you’ll have 48 hours to finish it before it expires, which means you’ll have to stream or download it again — assuming it’s still available.
- If you’re travelling outside of the United States or the country where you have an Amazon Prime membership, keep in mind that your downloaded titles may only play if you connect to the internet at your destination if they are also available in that region. Amazon Originals are typically available everywhere, so they are safe, but regionally distributed third-party titles may not be available.
It's also worth noting that if you cancel your Amazon Prime subscription, you'll lose access to your downloaded titles.
How Do I Delete Movies or Entire Seasons of Television Shows?
- Step 1: There are several methods for deleting a film or an entire show. Find the film/season you want to delete in the Downloads section. The first method is to swipe left on the title, which will reveal a Red trash can icon. Tapping this again confirms the deletion of the film and also deletes all episodes from the show you’ve chosen.
- Step 2: Next, tap the movie’s Three vertical dots menu and then select Delete download. An entire season of a show will have a small arrow instead of these dots. Tapping the show will take you to all of the show’s downloaded episodes. Read on to find out how to get rid of them.
How Do I Delete Individual Episodes of a Show?
- Step 1: To delete individual episodes of a show, go to Downloads and select the show you want to remove, which will display all of the episodes you have. In the top-right corner, press the Edit button.
- Step 2: Select the single episodes you want to delete and then click the red Delete button. You can also select all, which will check off all the episodes in the season for deletion.
Which Streaming Services Allow You To Download Content Offline?
In addition to Prime Video, several other content-streaming services allow users to download content for offline viewing.
- Netflix: With offline downloads, you can watch various Netflix movies and shows on the go. To download, you must have the Netflix app installed on a compatible iOS, Android, or Amazon device, as well as a Windows 10 computer or Chromebook. Search for content by clicking the Download icon (arrow down) next to the title, or narrow your video search by titles that can be downloaded.
- Hulu: Hulu (No Ads) subscribers can download specific movies and TV shows for offline viewing. You’ll need a compatible Android or iOS device with the Hulu app installed. Start the app, then look for content by clicking the Download icon (arrow down) next to the video. Remember that shows and movies from Premium Add-Ons and Live TV subscriptions cannot be downloaded.
- Disney Plus: Disney+ has hundreds of movies and shows, many of which are available for offline downloading. What’s more, guess what? The best part is that every Disney+ entry is free to download. Simply select the desired title and tap the Download button, which is located to the right of the Play Now button. Disney+ even lets you choose your download quality if you need more storage space.
- YouTube: A YouTube Premium subscription is required for offline YouTube viewing. YouTube Premium costs $12 per month (free for the first month) and includes ad-free YouTube viewing, ad-free YouTube Music, and offline downloads. To take advantage of these benefits, you must first download and launch the YouTube app on your phone or tablet (no computer or laptop support is currently available). Begin watching a video in the app, then tap the Download button beneath the video player.
Download Amazon Prime Movies That You’ve Rented or Bought
You must first download and install the Prime Video app, which is available for Android 4.1 and later and iOS 9.3 and later.
Assuming you’ve already bought or rented a movie or TV show, start the download on a supported device:
- Connect your device to the internet and launch the Prime Video app.
- Tap the hamburger menu, which is represented by three horizontal lines.
- Select Video Library.
- Depending on the video you want, select either Movies or TV Shows.

- Good: One hour of video takes about 0.27 GB of data and storage.
- Data Saver: One hour of video requires about 0.14 GB of data and storage. The lower the download quality, the lower the video quality.
- The video should begin downloading, with the percentage completed displayed on the right.
- Tap Complete when the download is finished, and you’re ready to watch.
- Click Take me to the downloads page.
- Tap the hamburger menu to watch it later.
- Select Downloads.
- To begin playing any of your downloaded videos, tap Play.
Can You Legally Download Amazon Prime Movies?
You certainly can. However, Amazon does not allow downloading to just any device; you must have one that is compatible:
Kindle Fire tablets (except the first generation) OR compatible devices running the following operating systems, as long as the Prime Video app is installed:
- iOS
- Android
- macOS
- Windows 10
Can I download Amazon Prime Movies on a Mac?
Yes. It must only be running macOS and have the Prime Video app installed to qualify as a compatible device.

Yes, you can download Amazon movies on any laptop running Android, iOS, macOS, or Windows 10. Make sure you have the Prime Video app installed on them.

How to View Downloaded Media
You can watch a video you’ve downloaded from Prime Video’s Downloads tab.
- Launch the Prime Video app on the device that contains the downloaded video.
- At the bottom of the screen, tap Downloads.
- Locate and tap the video you want to watch.
The “Downloads” tab will display all movies you’ve downloaded on this device. When you choose a movie, you’ll be taken to the video’s details page. To begin watching, press the Play button.
On the other hand, when you select a TV show, a list of any episodes you’ve downloaded will appear. Tap the one you want to view to bring up the details page, then tap the Play button.
Does Amazon Prime Video Offer Free Movies
You can access an extensive library of free titles if you have an Amazon Prime Video subscription. If you’re a Prime member who’s signed in while browsing, look for Included with Prime on the video’s details page and click Watch Now to begin watching for free.
If you aren’t a Prime Video member, the video’s details page should say Watch for $0.00 with Prime. Furthermore, many of Prime Video’s shows are available for free with an IMDb TV subscription. Amazon also makes it simple to browse all free Prime Videos.
