Understanding Confluent Cloud

Confluent Cloud is a broad and flexible streaming platform for cloud services. It is powered by “Apache Kafka,” which is easily accessible and secured and enables easy access to data ingestion and processing on all Major Clouds.

With the use of Confluent Cloud, one can easily get access to carrying out various tasks on a large workload of data without compromising on performance. In other words, carrying out larger scales or workloads and delivering them on time without complications

Cloud servers can be accessed in all data centers around the world. This is possible because the Cloud server is a “WAN”, which is known as a “Wide Area Network”. It allows the host users to share valuable data and information and enables communications between various hosts, or users, via cloud-based services and technology.

What is Confluent Cloud Status?

Monitoring the Status of the Cloud gives its users ease of mind when delivering services. The status can be studied by experts on that level with the use of a chart, which brings out readings on the current status of the cloud from UP >WORN >DOWN>MAINTENANCE

Confluent Cloud API

APIs are devices that enable the functionality of two software components to communicate or share information with each other using a set of definitions and protocols. For example, the calendar app bureau’s software system contains daily Calendar dates and other notification data. The app on your phone, “talks” to this system via APIs and shows you daily updates on your calendar date, and other events on that app. 

The Confluent Cloud API is known to be one of the essential building blocks of the Confluent Cloud. It can be used to manage one’s account and serves as an “Indicator” on the Confluent cloud. The primary purpose of a Confluent cloud API is to be intent-oriented. The merging or combining of other API resources produces a Confluent Cloud API.

Confluent Cloud Pricing

There are various pricing options available on the Confluent cloud, and each pricing system is designed to carry out various tasks and functions. The Confluent Cloud pricing system is designed to give users various options, and methods of payment via various packages of the cloud services. The pricing system consists of four different types, which are:

  • Basic
  • Standard
  • Dedicated

The Basic Cluster is ideal for teams that wish to test the software or are still in the development phase. It has a supply and demand cluster. Even though it is technically free, once you reach a certain limit, you must upgrade to the standard version. If your team is unsure whether Confluent is the right option, you may always begin with this strategy.

Standard, on the other hand, is ideal for teams that are eager to get started. The package includes your first 500 partitions and allows you to increase speed to 1 GBps. Teams that need to stream more than 1 GBps of events, however, should choose Dedicated.

The main distinction between these pricing systems is the amount of traffic they can handle. It is not a case of “bigger is better,” especially if you do not intend to stream that many events each hour.

Confluent Cloud Metrics API

The Confluent cloud has a “Metrics” sector that allows its users to examine consumption, and performance and comprehend various patterns over time. It also aids in the provision of information for monitoring, troubleshooting, and capacity planning.

To communicate with the Metrics API, you must have a Cloud API Key. Using the Cluster API Key to communicate with Kafka results in an authentication problem.

Furthermore, in the Confluent Cloud Console, add the MetricsViewer Role to a new service account. The MetricsViewer role grants all clusters in an organization’s service account access to the Metrics API. This position also grants service accounts access to third-party analytics platforms.

How to Add the MetricsViewer Role to a New Service Account in the Confluent Cloud Console

For all of a company’s clusters, the MetricsViewer role grants access to the Metrics API for service accounts. With this permission, service accounts can also export data to external metric services.

To give a new cloud service account the MetricsViewer role:

  1. Click Administration > Cloud API keys in the upper-right administration menu () of the Confluent Cloud user interface.
  2. Select the Add button.
  3. To set the scope for the API key, click the Granular Access tile. 
  4. Tap Create a new one and enter the service account name as well as a description if necessary.

The API key and secret for the service account have been generated. Keep this API key and secret safe because you will need them to join the cluster. Go ahead and save the document. The API key and its associated ACLs are assigned to the new service account. You can confirm the newly created API key when you return to the API access tab.

  1. Return to the administration menu and click Accounts & Access, then Service Accounts in the Accounts tab to access your service accounts.
  2. Select the service account to which you want to assign the MetricsViewer role.
  3. On the service account’s information page, tap Access.
  4. In the tree view, open the resource where you want the service account to have the MetricsViewer role.
  5. Click Add role assignment after selecting the MetricsViewer tile. Save the document.

When you return to Accounts & Access, you will notice the resources of the organization as well as the MetricsViewer role binding for the service account you created.

Confluent Cloud Competitors and Alternatives

Competition is inevitable in the world of business. Therefore, keeping up with users’ demands, meeting expectations, and delivering a secure and reliable service is important for any business.

The major competitor to Confluent is Apache Kafka. Confluent’s founders were also contributors to the Apache Kafka project, which is completely separate from Confluent and is currently handled by the Apache Software Foundation. Apache Kafka, a data stream processing software, is free and open source. Confluent, on the other hand, is a managed and commercial option for enterprise teams looking to streamline software maintenance.

Additionally, 80 percent of Fortune 100 companies—including Netflix, Dailymotion, and Red Hat—use Apache Kafka software. They are most commonly used in the banking, industrial, insurance, and telecommunications industries.

Other Apache Confluent technologies, including the Stream Designer, Stream Governance, and ksqlDB, are incompatible with Kafka. It will come with pre-built connectors for enterprise-level interfaces, access to the Kafka Streams library, and the ability to connect to a variety of other open-source technologies.

It’s more like a renewed Kafka (like bringing out an invention that’s more advanced than an already existing invention)—it is like the modifications of a desktop to a PC, but with a more flexible and different function. 

Confluent provides an accurate cloud-native experience that delivers a vast, scalable, and worldwide service that’s always ready to carry out data analysis in minutes without delay. 

Apache Kafka falls under the category of Data operations, which serve a specific function as a message queuing system. It’s free and provides high throughput, high availability, and low latency. It can be used either on its own or with additional technology.

Is Confluent Cloud Free?

Well, it’s a yes and no situation. The confluent Cloud system in terms of opening an account, creating an account, and registration is free. But when it comes to carrying out various tasks and activities, you’d have to make payments.

It can be seen as a paid cloud network because the amount of time and number of days are estimated and given. In other words, you’d just pay for the service time you’d need.
