A reseller is a person, enterprise, company, or brand that sells something they have bought to someone else or another brand. Wikipedia defines a reseller as a company or merchant that purchases goods or services with the intention of selling them rather than consuming them. A reseller is a specific kind of channel partner who serves as a middleman between firms that produce, distribute, or offer IT products or services and end users, who may be consumers or businesses. Order fulfillment has traditionally been a key reseller function. Customers turn to resellers to streamline the ordering process and offload procurement and order processing duties.

How Reseller functions: IT companies provide affiliate management incentives so that resellers can buy products for less than retail price comparatively. Discounts for resellers could be anywhere from 10% to 30%, depending on the type of product and the amount the reseller buys, among other things. These discounts are designed to pay the marketing and sales expenditures of the channel partner while still creating enough for a profitability ratio otherwise.

Reseller Certificate

The resale certification or resale permit is proof that you are an authorized retailer or buyer and that you are making purchases to either resell or use as parts of goods you intend to resell.

You typically need to be registered to collect tax on sales in at least one US state in order to use a resale certificate, obviously. Generally speaking, your sales tax permit and resale certificate are the same thing, particularly called a sales tax license. However, on occasion, a state might provide a reseller its own “resale certificate” number. Using a resale certificate, merchants can buy products to resell without having to pay local sales tax on such products. When selling goods with a resale certificate, also known as a tax exemption certificate, it is the seller’s duty to collect the applicable sales tax from the buyer. The buyer is responsible for paying sales tax on the goods they plan to resell if they don’t have a resale certificate.
