The concept behind the new Apple iOS 17 Contact Posters is simple: instead of displaying whatever name you’re stored as on a friend’s or family member’s phone, Contact Posters allow you to customize the image and name that people see when you call.

This gives you the luxury of not only changing your name but also adding a full-screen photo or memoji and other effects to help you see who’s calling at a glance. In turn, it will appear on any iPhone running iOS 17 when you call them.

It’s a cool new feature for iPhone users who have installed the iOS 17 update, but in typical Apple fashion, you won’t be prompted to enable it. Instead, you’ll have to figure out how to set up your Contact Poster yourself after you have installed iOS 17.

Fortunately, you no longer have to figure that out on your own. In the next few paragraphs, I’ll walk you through exactly what you need to do to set up a Contact Poster in iOS 17. I will also provide you with the information you’ll need to navigate other related iOS 17 features, like the NameDrop.

Let’s set the ball rolling…

With iOS 17, Apple has added a number of new features to the iPhone, one of which is Contact Poster, which allows you to create your own digital calling card using images, colors, and text.

Here’s how it works: when you call someone from iPhone to iPhone and are in their contacts, your Contact Poster appears on their screen. It replaces the previous much smaller notification and thumbnail picture and allows you to be more creative with how you want to appear to your friends, family, or colleagues.

While setting up your Contact Poster, you can also modify your Apple ID avatar to reflect the poster. If you go into Settings on your iPhone or Mac, for example, you’ll notice that you can change your profile picture to match whatever you’ve set up as your Contact Poster, whether that’s a new image you’ve taken or a specific Memoji.

To access the Contact Poster settings in iOS 17, follow these steps:

The first thing you’ll notice is your Contact Poster options, which include whether you want to share your name and photo at all, the first and last name you want to use, and whether you want iOS to automatically share your posters with everyone in your contact list or to ask you every time you call someone in your contact list.

To set up a new Contact Poster, follow these steps:

Whatever type of Contact Poster you’re making, when you’re finished, tap Done and then Continue on the preview screen.

You’ll then be taken to the Contact Photo page, where you can use your new Contact Poster to update your main contact photo, which is used for your Apple ID across all of your devices and in other people’s contact lists. If you don’t want to do it, tap Skip; otherwise, tap Continue. (You can also choose Choose a Different Photo from the Continue menu.)

If you choose Skip or Continue, you’ll be taken back to the screen where you first selected Contact Photo & Poster, and your new Contact Poster will be saved.

To switch between and customize the various Contact Posters you’ve created:

It’s also worth noting that Contact Posters integrate with another new iOS 17 feature, NameDrop. Bring your iPhone close to someone else’s iPhone or Apple Watch, and assuming both devices have Bluetooth enabled, you should get a prompt asking if you want to transfer your contact information.

When you first launch the Phone app on an iPhone running iOS 17, you will be prompted to update your name and photo. You can also set it up at a later time. Here are the steps for creating a contact poster on iOS 17.

Contact Posters can also be set up for saved contacts on your iPhone. Because you are creating and customizing these posters, you will only see them when you receive a call from that contact. To do this:

When you tap Customize Poster, you will be taken to the Choose Your Poster page.
