What Is a CPE?

Customer Premises Equipment, or CPE, is any device at a customer’s location that communicates with a provider network in order to gain access to the Internet or other services offered by that network. The CPE can be supplied by the telecommunications provider, which could be a cable TV or phone business or even a satellite TV service. These businesses either allow customers to buy or furnish their own equipment, provide it at no extra cost as part of the service, or rent it to them. CPE, or customer premise equipment, is a networking device that is placed at the customer’s location and acts as an intermediary between the provider’s WAN and the local area network (LAN) in their house.
