Face ID, introduced by Apple, is a biometric authentication method that can be used instead of the Touch ID technology found in the Home button of older iPhones. If you have an iPhone X or a later model, all you have to do is look at the display to verify your identity, even in low light, thanks to the TrueDepth camera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You can use Face ID to unlock your iPhone, log in to certain websites and apps, and make purchases using Apple Pay. Thanks to a recent iOS update, you can now use Face ID even when you\u2019re hiding your face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As long as you follow the right procedures, using Face ID is a breeze. However, if you run into any issues, we have some suggestions for how to fix them. Furthermore, here\u2019s how to set up and use Face ID.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When you first set up your iPhone, you\u2019ll be prompted to enable Face ID. However, you can go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode at a later time to configure it. Set up your Face ID with a password.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you have an iPhone X or iPhone 11 model, or haven\u2019t updated your iPhone 12 or iPhone 13 to iOS 15.4, you will be asked to do a second scan. Click the Next button to proceed. Reposition your face as necessary during the scan, and when it\u2019s done, tap the Done button.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Face ID normally requires a full facial scan, so if you want to unlock your phone or make a purchase with Apple Pay while wearing a mask, you won\u2019t be able to. A passcode is required instead for verification purposes. Apple, however, has made it possible to use Face ID while donning a mask with the release of iOS 15.4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While this method is more convenient than full facial scanning, it is only as secure as the unique features around your eyes. In addition, iOS 15.4 or later is required for use with Face ID with a mask on the iPhone 12 or later. When you first set up Face ID, right after the initial scan, you\u2019ll be asked if you want to use Face ID with a Mask if you meet the above criteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To use Face ID with a mask after it has already been set up, go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode and toggle the switch on. When prompted to use Face ID while wearing a mask, select that option from the menu. Make sure you\u2019re not wearing a mask, then tap the Get Started button and scan your face again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You can change Face ID options in Settings > Face ID & Passcode. Apple has Face ID enabled for iPhone unlocking, making purchases from iTunes and App Stores, using Wallet and Apple Pay, and auto-filling passwords in Safari. If you\u2019d rather enter your credentials or use your phone\u2019s passcode, turn the switch off for that option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To view a list of compatible apps with Face ID, select Other Apps. If you don\u2019t want to use Face ID with a specific app, you can disable it here. In general, though, you\u2019ll probably want to keep Face ID enabled across the board for its security and simplicity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The initial Face ID scan is followed by the option to save a second scan as a backup identity. You can use this to re-scan your face with a different hairstyle or glasses or to scan the face of someone you trust to use as a backup for Face ID. Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Set Up an Alternate Appearance > Get Started and perform the scan to create a new identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If you use glasses occasionally and have previously set up Face ID with a Mask, you can create a new scan to recognize you when you are wearing glasses. Four pairs of glasses (but not sunglasses) are allowed. Wearing your glasses, select Add Glasses and then proceed with the scan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tap Set Up Face ID with a Mask for Alternate Appearance if you have already set up an alternate appearance and want to set up another one to use with a mask. To run the scan once more, proceed as before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For Face ID to work, you must look directly into your phone\u2019s camera lens. This is an extra layer of protection to ensure your phone hasn\u2019t been locked out of your possession. To enable this function, go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode and toggle the Require Attention for Face ID switch on. To keep using Face ID with a Mask, you must keep this setting active.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You can configure Face ID to ask for your permission before performing certain actions, like turning off the screen\u2019s brightness, accessing a notification from the lock screen, or lowering the volume of an alert. To activate this, turn on the switch for Attention-Aware Features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If you have an Apple Watch, you can use it to unlock your phone by toggling a switch next to your watch\u2019s name. This can be useful if you ever have trouble with Face ID or if your device doesn\u2019t support Face ID while wearing a Mask. Your unlocked watch on your wrist must be close by for this to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You can try out Face ID by locking your phone with a tap of the side button. A quick sideways glance will reveal the Lock screen, complete with lock icon. You can unlock the lock icon by looking directly at the screen. The contents of the Lock screen, including messages and missed calls, are now available to you. To access your Home screen, swipe up from the bottom of the display.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If you set up Face ID with a Mask, put on a mask and try that process again. You can also put Face ID to the test by letting your phone go to the Lock screen automatically after some time has passed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Is it possible to use Face ID to make a payment? Launch an app from the App Store or iTunes on your mobile device. Choose the item\u2019s price you\u2019d like to pay and tap it. When you double-click the Side button, a window will pop up instructing you to pay for the content. If you do that, your Face ID will be used to verify the purchase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It\u2019s time to put Apple Pay to use and make a real-world purchase. Get yourself to a shop, cafe, or other establishment that takes Apple Pay. To make a purchase, simply hold your phone near the card reader and double-click the Side button. Simply activate Face ID and proceed with the purchase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Try out an app that necessitates a password unlock next. Launch a program that usually necessitates a password or other form of authentication before you can use it. When you first launch the app, it may prompt you to sign in with Face ID. If not, you may need to enable it in the app\u2019s settings.
