The Dynamic Island is one of the most anticipated new features of the iPhone 15 Pro. It’s a pill-shaped cutout at the top of the display that houses the front-facing camera and Face ID sensors. But the Dynamic Island is more than just a cutout—it’s also a display element that can change shape and size to display important information and notifications.

In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the Dynamic Island on the iPhone 15 Pro and all of the things it can do.

Let’s get started with the basics…

The Dynamic Island is a pill-shaped cutout at the top of the iPhone 15 Pro display that houses the front-facing camera and Face ID sensors. It’s also a display element that can change shape and size to display important information and notifications.

The Dynamic Island works using a combination of hardware and software. The hardware includes a new display technology that allows the pixels around the cutout to be individually controlled. The software includes a new animation engine that can create fluid and dynamic animations.

Yes, all iPhone 15 models, not only the Pro ones, now support the Dynamic Island.

Last year, the Dynamic Island was only available on the top-tier iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models. The notch that has been there since the iPhone X was present on both the standard iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Plus.

This year, though, it’s different. All iPhone 15 models now feature the Dynamic Island, thanks to Apple. You will receive the Dynamic Island whether you purchase an iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, or iPhone 15 Pro Max. Apple has effectively eliminated the notch from the equation with this modification.

The Dynamic Island is only available on the iPhone 14 Pro, and the normal iPhone 14 devices have the same notch as the iPhone 13 models from the prior generation. Apple added Dynamic Island support for the iPhone 15, iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max in 2023.

Notifications like Apple Pay purchases, low battery alerts, AirDrop transfers, Apple Maps directions, incoming phone calls, currently playing music, SharePlay sessions, and screen recordings may all be seen on the Dynamic Island.

The feature even integrates with a number of third-party apps, such as Carrot Weather, Flighty, Google Maps, Pestle, SmartGym, and others, to display pertinent data.

In many instances, pressing down on the Dynamic Island will expand the activity’s window. In other situations, tapping the Dynamic Island will open the activity’s full-screen app. To enlarge or minimize the window, you can also swipe on it. Here are a few illustrations of how this works.

You can use Apple Pay to make a purchase at a physical store or online. When you double-click the side button to complete the purchase, a whirling green picture indicating Face ID validation appears on Dynamic Island. The image changes to a green smiling face once your face has been verified and the transaction has been completed.

For AirDrop transfers, the Dynamic Island acts as a visual status indicator. An indication will show the status of the file transfer when things are shared with you on the Dynamic Island. A checkmark appears in the same place once the procedure is finished.

Every time an app or service uses your camera or microphone, an indicator of privacy is visible on your iPhone. On phones that support the functionality, the Dynamic Island contains these indicator lights. A green dot appears on the display when you open an app that has access to your camera; when you open one that has access to your microphone, an orange dot appears.

A timer can be watched through the Dynamic Island. Open the Clock app first, then set a timer. The countdown in minutes is then shown on the Dynamic Island. You can see the timer and pause or stop it by pressing down on the display to enlarge the information. To access the complete Clock app, tap the Dynamic Island.

When you move to the Home screen while on a call, the Dynamic Island shows the time left on the call as well as a gauge for the loudness. You can also use it to change the audio source, see the length, see the caller’s name or number, and hang up or minimize the display. To launch the Phone app, tap the screen.

You can go back to the Home screen in Apple Maps navigation to view turn-by-turn instructions in the Dynamic Island. The next turn with an option to end the trip will be displayed when you press down on the display. When you tap the Dynamic Island, the full-screen mode of the Maps app will launch.

The Dynamic Island presents you with a volume gauge and a little representation of album art on the Home screen. When you press down on the Dynamic Island, a larger display with controls to pause, play, go back, and forward, as well as the album art, the song’s title, and the artist, appears.

The Dynamic Island displays a record button that notifies you that the screen is being recorded if you have started a recording of your screen activities. A timer and a button to stop the recording will appear when you tap or press down on the Dynamic Island. The recording has been saved to your photo library, according to the display, which appears when you press the Stop button.

Some of the stuff that is shown on the Dynamic Island can be interacted with. If it’s displaying information on an app’s background activity, for instance, you can press the Dynamic Island to jump right into the relevant app.

You may also long-press the Dynamic Island to display a widget with playback controls when the media is playing, for example.

The Dynamic Island can also show several background events simultaneously, such as when a timer is running out while music is playing. As a result, you can view and engage with both activities as the island divides into a bigger pill-shaped region and a smaller circular area. Similar to how you can with the default Dynamic Island interface, you can switch between them and tap into them.

Dynamic Island content cannot presently be completely disabled; however if its movements are causing you to lose focus, you can dismiss them by swiping left or right across the Dynamic Island without interrupting any connected background activity. The pill shape will revert to its earlier inert state as a result.

Overall, the Dynamic Island on the iPhone 14 Pro and all iPhone 15 models is a great example of the software and hardware synergy for which Apple is renowned, and given that third-party developers can take advantage of its potential, we can anticipate the release of new and unexpected features.
