Standby, Namedrop, Contact Posters; What do these terms have in common? It’s definitely not music, even though they sound like cool band names. They are some of the best new features in iOS 17 and iPadOS 17. These operating systems have a slew of new features, which I have covered in detail below to help you get acquainted with iOS 17.

iOS 17: New Features

#1. Lock Screen Improvements

Apple made significant modifications to the Lock Screen in iOS 16, and there are even more tweaks and features in iOS 17 to make your Lock Screen more useful.

StandBy

StandBy is a new iPhone Lock Screen mode that appears when your iPhone is in landscape mode (horizontal) and charging with a MagSafe, Qi, or Lightning charger. It’s comparable to the Apple Watch’s Nightstand mode in that it turns the iPhone into a handy information hub when it’s not in use.

Through widget support, your iPhone can show the time, a calendar, favourite photographs aggregated with the Memories feature, incoming alerts, music playback controls, Siri responses with rich visuals, Live Activities, the weather, and more when in StandBy mode. You can navigate between different choices by swiping left or right and customize by long-pressing.

You can adjust the style of the time, the photos you see, and which widgets appear on the StandBy screen. All your Lock Screen widgets are available, allowing you to create a StandBy hub tailored to your exact requirements.

StandBy works best with an always-on display, but it activates with a tap for iPhones that do not support always-on technology.

Interactive Widgets

Widgets on the Lock Screen and Home Screen are interactive, allowing you to use them without opening an app. You can check off a task using Reminders, for example, or control your smart lighting with Home. Apple apps use interactive widgets, and developers will be allowed to use interactive widgets in third-party apps.

We have a dedicated Lock Screen guide with screenshots, lessons, and an analysis of every feature for an in-depth look at the iOS 17 Lock Screen.

#2. Keyboard Modifications

For enhanced autocorrection, iOS 17 has updated machine learning technologies. Predictions are improving, and autocorrect is learning more about your patterns as you use it. In addition to spelling suggestions, Autocorrect can provide grammar suggestions.

Autocorrection

Tapping on the space bar now allows you to use inline predictions to finish words instead of reaching up and tapping to insert a word, and it can also finish entire sentences.

When autocorrected words are mended, the iPhone and iPad highlight them so you can see what’s changed and return to what you initially typed with a short tap.

#3. AirDrop Updates

NameDrop, a new AirDrop function, allows you to exchange contact information by holding your iPhone near another iPhone or Apple Watch. You can share specific phone numbers and email addresses, as well as transmit your Contact Poster to someone.
